Recep Çetin (born October 1, 1965 in Karasu ) is a former Turkish football player and coach. His nickname when playing was Takoz Recep .

Player career

society

Çetin began his club football career at the provincial club Sakaryaspor, which is known for its youth work . Here he played with later stars like Oğuz Çetin , Engin İpekoğlu and İlker Yağcıoğlu . He also found the opportunity to train under the nationally known youngster coach Ekrem Karaberberoğlu . This formed Çetin over the years into a classic right- back . He played this position almost to the end of his career.

For the 1984/85 season he moved to the then first division team Boluspor . At this club, despite his young age, he immediately won a regular place and played all of his team's league and cup games. His debut in the highest Turkish league and with his new club Boluspor he gave on August 25, 1984 against his later club Beşiktaş Istanbul. After his team failed to stay up at the end of the season, he went to the new season with his team in the TFF 1. Lig . Here at the end of the season the championship of the TFF 1st Lig was reached and thus the direct promotion to the Süper Lig . Çetin played for Boluspor for two more years and became one of the most sought-after shooting stars.

In addition to his work at Boluspor, his work for the Turkish U-21s and the Olympic selection made him the target of talent hunters of the major Istanbul clubs. Even before the end of the season, he was considered one of the most sought-after players in the next transfer window. After the end of the season 1987/88 and with the beginning of the transfer period Çetin flew to South Korea with the Olympic selection of Turkey for participation in the Korea Cup . After participating in the tournament, he was received at Istanbul-Ataturk Airport by some board members of Beşiktaş Istanbul and immediately put under contract in the presence of a notary. At Beşiktaş, Çetin was next to the new players from the same transfer window as Les Ferdinand and Mehmet Özdilek to the players on whom the British coach Gordon Milne counted the most. He formed with the players Gökhan Keskin , Ulvi Güveneroğlu and Kadir Akbulut Beşiktaş 'legendary defense line, which for many years was responsible for the greatest successes in the club's history. In his first season he completed almost all of his team's matches and was instrumental in winning the Turkish Football Cup , the TSYD Kupası and the Turkish Supercup . He made his debut for his new club on August 10, 1988 in the TSYD-Kupası encounter against Fenerbahçe Istanbul . This season he also made his breakthrough in the Turkish national team .

Beşiktaş Istanbul dominated the Turkish league for the next three seasons and won the championship three times in a row. During this time, Çetin was an integral part of the team that the club and the fans call legendary .

He lost the status of the undisputed regular player in the 1997/98 season under John Toshack . He put Çetin on the bench after the winter break and instead let Ertuğrul Sağlam play in the position of right defender. At the end of the season, Toshack declared that he would no longer plan with Çetin and insisted on his sale.

So Çetin had to leave Beşiktaş after ten years of activity and switched to league rivals Trabzonspor . Here he played continuously, but could not build on his old achievements.

After a season at Trabzonspor, he moved to İstanbulspor . Decisive for the transfer was the fact that İstanbulspor was trained by the former Beşiktaş star Ziya Doğan . At his new club he fell out in the first half of the season due to injury and played throughout the second half of the season. In the second season he played continuously. After his contract here expired and there was no coach who insisted on an extension, he was left without a club in the summer of 2001.

Despite his long activity for Beşiktaş, he ended his active professional football career in the winter of 2001 without having completed a farewell encounter.

National team

Çetin played for the Turkish national teams for the first time during his time at Sakaryaspor. In a friendly game of the Turkish U-18 national team against the U-18 of the Soviet Union , he played the full length of the game.

After two and a half years for no other national team level, he was nominated by his convincing performance at Boluspor on October 28, 1986 for the Turkish U21 national team and made his debut in this age group on October 28, 1986 against the Yugoslav U21 national team .

In November 1988 Çetin was nominated for the first time for the squad of the Turkish national team by the then national coach Coşkun Özarı as part of a qualifying match of the European Championship in 1988 against the Northern Irish national team , but was only on the bench in this encounter.

After this encounter he was nominated for the qualifying games of the 1988 Summer Olympics for the Olympic selection. He played for all three of the latter national teams over the next two years. They just missed qualifying for the Summer Olympics.

He made his debut in the Turkish national team under the new national coach Tınaz Tırpan on March 16, 1988 during a friendly against the Hungarian national team . After moving to Beşiktaş Istanbul in the summer of 1988, he also received a regular place in the national team and was undisputedly in the position of right-back for many years.

Çetin's first big challenge with the national team was qualifying for the 1990 World Cup . Here he was used in seven of eight qualifying matches for the 1990 World Cup . Although they were the superior side in the games against the Austrian national team with a 3-2 away defeat and a 3-0 home win, they finished third with unnecessary point losses such as a home defeat against the Icelandic national team , two points behind Austria Place in the table and so missed the qualification.

After the missed qualification, the national coach Tınaz Tırpan was replaced by the German Sepp Piontek . Piontek had previously formed the Danish national team into a strong team and celebrated great success with it. Something similar was hoped for with Turkey. Qualification for the European Football Championship in 1992 began with the new coach . In qualifying for the World Cup in 1990 , the new coach suffered six defeats in six qualifying encounters and finished last in the table. The national team managed only one goal over the entire qualifying phase. Çetin came to three missions during this qualifying period.

Despite this disappointing qualification, they stuck to Piontek and started with him in qualifying for the 1994 World Cup . This qualification phase also got off to a disappointing start. Six of the first eight encounters were lost. Only against San Marino one achieved a home win and a draw away. After the away defeat against the Norwegian national team , an agreement was reached with Piontek to terminate the contract.

The U-21 national coach Fatih Terim was introduced as interim coach . With this coach, the hoped-for change in the national team occurred. The last two qualifying games against the Polish national team and the Norwegian national team were won with ease. Çetin played eight out of ten qualifying games. After these surprising successes, Terim was introduced as a regular new national coach.

Terim sorted out several seasoned national players like Rıza Çalımbay for the upcoming qualification of the European Football Championship in 1996 and went into the qualifying games with a team of partly young and partly experienced players. Çetin was one of the players who should continue to appear for the national team. Under Terim, the national team played a convincing qualification. First they fought against Hungary away 2-2. In the second encounter they beat the previous feared opponent Iceland, where they lost their qualification for the 1990 World Cup , 5-0 at home. The next encounter, a home game, was unfortunately lost 2-1 to Switzerland . In this encounter, Çetin succeeded from 45 meters away. This hit was chosen as the hit of the qualifying group match day and was featured in the opening credits of several football programs for a long time. The next game against Sweden was won 2-1 at home. Then the revenge succeeded with a 1: 2 away win against Switzerland. At the end of the qualification, participation in a European football championship was successful for the first time in the association's history . Çetin played in seven of eight qualifying games. He was also part of Turkey's tournament squad during the European Championship. Here they were eliminated in the group stage, with Çetin being used in two games.

After the EM 96 he was also regularly nominated under the new national coach Mustafa Denizli and was active in four qualifying games of the 1998 World Cup . After the bitter home defeat against the Belgian national team , with which Turkey missed the qualification, he was no longer nominated for the national team. Another reason for the end of his national team career was the fact that Çetin also rarely ran up in his club.

Coaching career

After finishing his active career, Çetin stayed away from football for a long time and worked as an investor in the paint and plastics industry. Through the approval of his former teammates, he was a few times coach or co-coach of the reserve team of Beşiktaş '. So he took over for the 2005/06 season in addition to the head coach and his former team captain Rıza Çalımbay, the reserve team Beşiktaş '.

From summer 2007 he assisted his former teammate Samet Aybaba as assistant coach at Çaykur Rizespor .

In September 2009 he took over the post of assistant coach at his hometown club Sakaryaspor and assisted his former teammate from the youth of Sakaryaspor, İlker Yağcıoğlu .

The last time he was at Bucaspor in 2010/11 was Samet Aybabas' assistant coach.

For the 2012/13 season Aybaba was presented as head coach at Beşiktaş Istanbul . After a short time, Çetin was hired together with Ulvi Güveneroğlu as a new assistant coach.
