Ulvi Güveneroğlu (born July 26, 1960 in Elazığ ) is a former Turkish football player and coach. Through his many years of work for Beşiktaş Istanbul and as a home-grown man, he is very strongly associated with this club. Fan and club members regard him as one of the most important players in club history. He holds several club records. With 404 first division appearances for Beşiktaş he is after Rıza Çalımbay (494) the player with the most Süper Lig appearances in the club's history and with 401 in the list of football players with the most Süper Lig appearances in 15th place.
Player career
society
Güveneroğlu started his club career in the youth of Elazığspor and later rose here in the squad of the professional team. After he was active here until the summer of 1979, Güveneroğlu left his hometown club and moved to the traditional club Beşiktaş Istanbul . At this club he gradually established himself after two seasons as a regular player and top performer. His club experienced in Güveneroğlu's first season, the 1979/80 season , one of its weakest performances of the season and only secured relegation in the last few game days. In Güveneroğlu's second season, his team established itself in the top third of the table, but had no chance in the championship. In the 1981/82 season , the team with the Anatolian club Trabzonspor , which dominated Turkish football at the time, competed head-to-head for the Turkish championship throughout the season. In the end, Beşiktaş prevailed and became Turkish football champions again after fifteen years. Güveneroğlu formed a successful defensive trio with his two defensive colleagues Mehmet Ekşi and Samet Aybaba , which after Trabzonspors defense allowed the fewest goals. The next two seasons Beşiktaş had no chance in the championship again. The only ray of hope the team reached the cup final in the summer of 1984 and lost to Trabzonspor. Since the opponent also won the championship, Beşiktaş qualified for the UEFA Cup . It was only in the 1984/85 season that the team was able to play for the championship again and kept the chance of the championship until the last day of the game. In the end, the championship was awarded to arch-rivals Fenerbahçe Istanbul with one point difference . Güveneroğlu formed the most successful defense in the league this season with Aybaba and Kadir Akbulut , Hüsamettin Gökçen and the young Gökhan Keskin . With 19 goals conceded, the team conceded by far the fewest goals of all top division teams. In the first division season 1985/86 Güveneroğlu's team delivered this time over the entire season with arch-rivals Galatasaray Istanbul a head-to-head race for the Turkish championship. The team only secured this on the last day of the match, level on points with Galatasaray, thanks to the better goal difference. The team also won the President's Cup and the Navy Cup this season . The next season they won the Prime Minister's Cup , but awarded the championship to Galatasaray with one point difference. In the summer of 1987, the club hired a new coach with the Englishman Gordon Milne . Güveneroğlu immediately enjoyed Milne's trust and was one of the most important players on his team under this coach. His team finished the league again behind Galatasaray as runners-up. From the second season under Milne Güveneroğlu was an integral part of the club and fan side as legendary team, which won the Turkish championship three times in a row in the seasons 1989/90 , 1990/91 and 1991/92 . In the 1989/90 season, the team also won the Turkish Cup , making it the double for the first time in the club's history . Only in the last two of these seasons Güveneroğlu gradually lost his position within the team. After the 1992/93 season failed, the successful coach Milne was replaced by Christoph Daum in the summer of 1993 . This coach ordered a revision in the squad. Güveneroğlu was kept in the squad after this revision, but only played in four league games. This season he and his team won the Turkish Cup.
In the summer of 1994 he ended his playing career.
National team
Güveneroğlu was nominated for the Turkish U-21 national team in 1981 and that year played two games for his country's U-21 team.
Although Güveneroğlu was always a regular and top performer with Beşiktaş Istanbul , a top team in Turkish football, for about 15 years and the Turkish senior team changed coaches several times during this time, Güveneroğlu never played a single international match. His long-time defense partner Samet Aybaba , who, together with Güveneroğlu, formed the most successful defense in the league over several seasons , shared the same fate .
Coaching career
After finishing his active career, Güveneroğlu stayed away from football for a long time. Through the persuasion of his former teammate Samet Aybaba , he worked from March 2001 for the first division club Gençlerbirliği Ankara and assisted the head coach Aybaba. He then followed Aybaba in this role at his coaching stations at Gaziantepspor and Trabzonspor .
After Güveneroğlu had not worked as a coach for two years in 2003, he was presented in December 2005 2005/06 season at Beşiktaş as one of the assistants of Jean Tigana .
With the departure of Tiganas in the summer of 2007, Güveneroğlu Beşiktaş also left and subsequently tried his hand at İstanbulspor and Erzurumspor as head coach.
From November 2008 he assisted his former teammate Aybaba at Gençlerbirliği Ankara.
In the summer of 2010 he was hired as a youth player at Beşiktaş.
For the 2012/13 season Aybaba was presented as head coach at Beşiktaş Istanbul . After a short time Güveneroğlu was hired together with Recep Çetin as a new assistant coach. In the summer of 2013 he left Beşiktaş together with Aybaba.
