Rahim Zafer (born January 25, 1971 in Sakarya ) is a former Turkish soccer player and currently soccer coach. Due to his longstanding activities for Sakaryaspor , Gençlerbirliği Ankara and Beşiktaş Istanbul , he is associated with these associations. With the Turkish national team he took part in the European Championship in 1996 and came to two appearances during this tournament. With 342 first division appearances, he is one of the players with the most appearances in the Turkish Süper Lig .

Player career

society

Zafer began his club football career at the provincial club Sakaryaspor, which is known for its good youth work . He also found the opportunity to train under the nationally known youngster coach Ekrem Karaberberoğlu. Over the years, this formed Zafer into a classic defensive player . He played this position almost to the end of his career. At this time Sakaryaspor developed into a talent factory. Several players such as Recep Çetin , Engin İpekoğlu , Oğuz Çetin , Aykut Kocaman , Sinan Turhan , Özcan Kızıltan , Turhan Sofuoğlu , İlker Yağcıoğlu and Hakan Şükür were discovered, all of whom would later become important players in Turkish football. At the then second division team Zafer was integrated into the squad of the professional team in 1986 and made his first appearances a little later. In his very first season, he was promoted to champions of the TFF 1st Lig in the Süper Lig .

Raised to the top Turkish league, the club established itself in the middle table segment and finished 11th in the table at the end of the season. In the Turkish Football Cup , completely surprisingly, they reached the final for the first time in the club's history. The cup final was won against Samsunspor with a 2-0 win at home and a 1-1 away win. It was the first cup win in the club's history. Zafer, who with Hakan Şükür (both 16 years old) was one of the youngest players in the squad, made four league and two cup appearances in the 1987/88 season. Over the next two seasons, Zafer received more and more stakes as time went on, aided by the departure of several important players. After Sakaryaspor ended the season 1989/90 on the last place in the table, the club rose after three years of first division membership back in the 2nd league .

After relegation to the 2nd Lig in the summer of 1990, Sakaryaspor could only keep a few players in the squad. Zafer moved to the capital first division Gençlerbirliği Ankara . Since İlhan Cavcav's presidency, Gençlerbirliği had developed into a club that trained talented young players to become seasoned professionals and then sold them to richer clubs for a high transfer fee. In this environment, Zafer quickly established himself as an important player in the squad. After he played the first season at Gençlerbirliği with 20 league appearances, he won a regular place in the second season and rose a little later to one of the most important performers. So he drew the attention of the larger clubs in the Turkish 1st Lig . In the summer of 1993, Zafer took part in the Turkish Olympic selection at the Mediterranean Games and won the gold medal here with his team. This success made him even more aware of himself. Despite the poaching efforts of several first division clubs, Zafer did not get clearance from his club. In the 1993/94 season , the club reached 7th place in the table, the best first division placement for about 25 years. In the following season they reached the second-best first division placement in the club's history with 5th place in the table. Zafer was head of the defense, made a significant contribution to the club's success and also established himself in the Turkish national team .

After Zafer also played the 1995/96 season at Gençlerbirliği, he was nominated by national coach Fatih Terim in the national team for the 1996 European Championship . Gençlerbirliği saw May 1996 as the right time to sell Zafer profitably and announced that he wanted to give the player for a reasonable transfer fee. At the traditional Istanbul club Beşiktaş , the then assistant coach of the national team, Rasim Kara , was hired as a coach for the new season. Kara had called for Zafers to be signed as one of the terms of the change. The club's management reacted and signed the defender for a transfer fee of 150,000,000 Turkish lira . Moved to Beşiktaş, Zafer immediately established himself as a regular in the team. During the season they fought a duel for the Turkish championship with Galatasaray Istanbul and had to be content with the Turkish runner-up at the end of the season. In the UEFA Cup, they reached the round of 16 and thus achieved the best result in the club's history in this competition. In addition, they won the Prime Minister's Cup at the end of the season . The 1997/98 season ended far behind in 6th place in the table. In the Turkish Football Cup , however, you could prevail in the final against the two-time Turkish champion Galatasaray. After winning the Turkish Cup, they met Galatasaray again in the Turkish Supercup and this time they were able to prevail against the reigning champions. The following season Zafer and his team again delivered a head-to-head race with Galatasaray, but missed the championship again with a point difference and a significantly worse goal difference and had to be content with the runner-up again. The following season they were runner-up behind Galatasaray. For the 2001/02 season, the Italian coach Nevio Scala took over the coaching position at Beşiktaş. Zafer only played sporadically under this coach. At the end of the season, Scala was replaced by Christoph Daum . Daum announced a revision in the team squad for the coming season and put several seasoned players on the sales list, including a. also Zafer.

In 2000 he moved within the league to promoted Diyarbakırspor . After just one season he moved again and was hired by his old club, the second division team Sakaryaspor . There he only played the first half of the season and moved to the second half of the season for the South Korean club Daegu FC . Played for this club for four years. In the spring of 2005 he returned to his homeland and hired the second division Adanaspor . He left this club at the end of the season and agreed for the upcoming season with Kırıkkalespor . After he was active for Kırıkkalespor until February 2006, he dissolved his contract and declared the end of his active football career.

National team

Zafer started his national team career in 1986 in the Turkish U-16 national team. With this he qualified for the U-16 soccer championship in 1987 . After qualifying, he was also part of the tournament squad. Here they won group A and met the Italian U-16s in the semi-finals. They lost the game 1-0 and had to play for third place against hosts France. This encounter was clearly lost with 0: 3 and thus reached fourth place. Zafer played in all of his team's matches.

After the U-16, Zafer played two years for the Turkish U-18 and then a game for the Turkish U-21 national team .

On the occasion of his participation in the Mediterranean Games in 1993, Zafer was appointed to the squad of the Turkish Olympic team by the then U-21 national coach Fatih Terim . The team reached the final and won the gold medal with a 2-0 win over the Olympic selection of Algeria. Zafer was used in all of his team's games.

Due to his shown performances at Gençlerbirliği Ankara , Zafer was nominated by Terim, who has meanwhile been promoted to national coach, for the squad of the Turkish national team in a friendly against Romania . In this game, Zafer was only on the bench. After this encounter, Zafer was nominated three more times and was also on the bench in these games. He made his international debut in a friendly on April 9, 1996 against the Azerbaijani national team .

With the Turkish national team he took part in the European Championship in 1996 and came to two appearances during this tournament. After the European Championship, coach Terim was replaced by Mustafa Denizli ; Zafer was no longer considered under him.

Coaching career

After the end of his playing career, Zafer switched to coaching and worked at Kastamonuspor , Uşakspor and Polatlı Bugsaşspor as an assistant coach. In the summer of 2009 he worked at Kahramanmaraşspor for the first time as head coach. He then looked after several clubs in the lower Turkish professional leagues.

He has been in charge of the US team Dallas City FC since 2013. These play in the National Premier Soccer League .
