Monckton Hope

Monckton Hoffe (actually Reaney Monckton Hoffe-Miles , born December 26, 1880 in the Connemara region , Ireland , † November 4, 1951 in London ) was an Irish author. Hoffe wrote plays early in his career, some of which were later made into films. As the author of the original story of Die Falschspielerin , Hoffe was nominated for an Oscar in 1942 for “Best Original Story”.

Life

At the beginning of his career, Hoffe worked as an actor and stage manager on London stages. At the beginning of the 20th century he had his first successes as a playwright. His first work The Little Damozel ran successfully in London and was performed on the occasion of the birthday of King Edward VII in November 1909 in Sandringham. In the fall of 1910, Hoffe went to New York City and wrote several plays that were performed on Broadway , including Panthea and Anthony in Wonderland . In 1916 Hoffe's The Little Damozel was filmed for the first time, followed the following year by Panthea with Erich von Stroheim in one of his first roles. The film adaptation of Hoffe's play Cristilinda from 1928: Angel of the Road was nominated for an Oscar for two consecutive years . From 1932 Hoffe worked as a screenwriter for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and supplied the books for films such as Finale in St. Petersburg (1937) and The Last of Mrs. Cheyney (1937). With the outbreak of World War II , Hoffe returned to London and henceforth worked on behalf of the BBC . In 1941 Preston Sturges filmed Hoffe's play The Lady Eve . The following year, Hope received a nomination for "Best Original Story" at the Oscars, but Harry Segall was beaten.

1951 was the actor in the film Florence Nightingale - A life for neighbor to see. Hope died on November 4, 1951 in a retirement home in London.
