Fatih Uraz (born December 30, 1960 in Adana ) is a former Turkish football goalkeeper , coach and today's football expert. Through his many years of work for Samsunspor and the successes achieved with this club, he is very strongly associated with this club. He was also involved in some important events in Turkish football, such as the 8-0 defeat by the English national team and the traffic accident with the Samsunspor team bus, and is associated with these events. In the second half of the 1980s, he was one of the most important goalkeepers in Turkish football.
Player career
The first years and Hacettepe GK
Uraz was born in the southern Turkish port city of Adana , but moved with his family to the Turkish capital Ankara as a child . In 1974, the Ankara Beden Terbiyesi Bölge Müdürlüğü (German: Ankara Regional Directorate for Physical Education) organized a selection tournament for a planned football school with a capacity of 20 to 25 students on the apron of the May 19th Stadium . Uraz went to the May 19th Stadium with the intention of taking part in this selection tournament. When he got there he was surprised by a huge number of participants. The resigned fourteen-year-old Uraz stood out from his peers with a height of 177 cm. Without having shown his football skills on the field, he was selected in advance by the organizers because of his size with three other tall youngsters.
In 1974 he began his career in men's football at the then amateur club Hacettepe GK . Parallel to his football career, Uraz attended Gazi University and studied economics there . With this club he played three seasons in the regional Turkish amateur league and in the summer of 1977 he was promoted to the 3rd Futbol Ligi , which was then the third highest division in Turkish football. In this league, the club missed relegation after one season and rose again to the amateur league. Uraz stayed with Hacettepe GK, also because of his studies at Gazi Üniversitesi, and played in the amateur league for another year.
Boluspor
In the summer of 1979 he decided to change. So he hired the first division team Boluspor . With this club he spelled a reserve life for three seasons and only played ten competitive games. During his time at Boluspor he continued his studies in Ankara, but after four years he also realizes that he had not made any significant progress in his football career or in his studies.
Ankara Sitespor and move to Samsunspor
So in the summer of 1982 he decided to return to Ankara and concentrate more intensely on his studies. In addition, he continued his football career with the second division team Ankara Sitespor with less demands. With the intention of completing his studies quickly, he concentrated on his studies. At Sitespor, despite his studies, he shows convincing performance and received attractive transfer offers from such first division clubs as Gençlerbirliği Ankara , Denizlispor and Orduspor towards the end of the season . All these transfer attempts failed because of the above-average transfer fee of 12 million lira that the club president demanded from Sitespor. Uraz, who was not averse to a move to one of these clubs, already gave up hope of a move. At this point in time, the northern Turkish first division team Samsunspor rose to the second division through a defeat on the last match day against Mersin İdman Yurdu through a goal in the last minute of the game. A few days after Samsunspor's relegation, Uraz received a message from the club's president, Sitespor, asking him to visit him in his office. After Uraz appeared in the office as requested, he met the President and two other people. The president introduced the two men as members of the Samsunspor club, informed Uraz that he had reached an agreement with Samsunspor for his transfer fee and asked him to come to an agreement with Samsunspor as well. Avoiding this change, Uraz demanded an excessive sum of which he demanded two thirds in advance. After the club officials immediately put the required amount on the table, to Uraz's surprise, Uraz tried to avoid the change by demanding the commitment of his long-time teammate Rıfat Benli . The club officials rejected this request, whereupon Uraz did not agree to the change. Finally, those responsible for Samsunspor agreed to this demand and so Uraz switched to Samsunspor. Years later he learned that his future coach Nuri Asan should be behind Samsunspor's unwavering insistence on his move . This trained Amasyaspor in the 1983/84 season . In the encounter between Sitespor and Amasyaspor, Uraz showed such a convincing performance over the entire length of the game that Asan Samsunspor gave the emphatic advice to sign Uraz under any condition.
Samsunspor
At Samsunspor, Uraz found a very restless environment. Due to the high investment that was made in the team squad, the expectations were correspondingly high. In addition, there was a click formation in the club. All of these imponderables meant that Nuri Asan, Mehmet Babalık and Şükrü Esat Goran, three head coaches, had to leave before the winter break . Only after Fethi Demircan had taken over as coach for the second half of the 1983/84 season, the teams began to live up to expectations. At the end of the season, the increase in performance was not enough for the second division championship, which means that direct re-promotion was missed. In the following season, the 1984/85 season , Samsunspor under the leadership of Demircan took over the championship lead relatively early and kept it sovereign until the end of the season. In the end, the club became second division champions and thus rose to the first league . Uraz completed all the compulsory games of his team except for one league game and had a large share in this success through his performance.
Promoted to the first league, Uraz's team became the surprise team of the first division season 1985/86 . The team finished the league in 3rd place in the table and achieved the best first division placement in the club's history. Especially compared to the larger clubs, the team shows z. T. clear superiority. The reigning champions Fenerbahçe Istanbul were clearly beaten 4-0 at home and also defeated 1-0 away. Uraz stood out as one of the team's top performers and was promoted to the Turkish national team this season. In the next season, the club played for the championship for a long time with only in the last few weeks missed the connection to the two other championship contenders Galatasaray Istanbul and Beşiktaş Istanbul . Also this season Fenerbahçe were defeated 4-0 at home and 1-0 away. The team also met Fenerbahçe in the quarter-finals of the Turkish Football Cup . Since it became apparent that Fenerbahçe would not qualify for any European cup competition on the league placement, this club focused on the Turkish Cup competition. Under these tense circumstances, both teams delivered a thrilling game in the second leg, which was played in Istanbul on April 1, 1987. Fenerbahçe missed several high profile chances and missed a penalty. The game ended 0-0, which means that Samsunspor qualified for the semi-finals due to the first leg victory. Because Uraz was too carefree and happy about the semi-finals, he drew the displeasure of some Fenerbahçe players. This circumstance caused tumultuous situations on the pitch. As a result, the Fenerbahçe players Müjdat Yetkiner , Abdülkerim Durmaz , Sedat Karaoğlu and Hasan Özdemir were suspended from the national football association for eight months. In the cup final, the team lost to Sakaryaspor and finished the league in 4th place in the table.
The club also started successfully in the 1988/89 season and established itself at the top. Uraz completed all league encounters until the winter break. On the first match day of the second half of the season, the team had to play away against Malatyaspor . On the outward journey to Malatya , the Samsunspors team bus got into a serious accident, causing several players, coaches and club officials to be fatally injured or seriously injured. Due to this event, the team could not take part in the game in the second half of the season, so the Turkish Football Association decided not to let Samsunspor play for the second half. All games were decided 3-0 for the opponent Samsunspors. Samsunspor was bottom of the table, but was excluded from relegation. Uraz was in the team bus during the accident and survived with several injuries. Until this incident, Uraz's national team was set as the goalkeeper and he was also regularly elected to the team of the game day in the league.
Beşiktaş Istanbul and Adana Demirspor
After the tragic accident, Uraz was unable to find an agreement with Samsunspor to extend the contract. He himself stated that this was not for financial reasons. Since the quota of foreigners was limited to three players at the time and there was a lack of good Turkish goalkeepers, the big Turkish clubs were interested in signing Uraz. The traditional Istanbul club Beşiktaş tried hardest for Uraz . The club immediately reached an agreement with Uraz and signed him in early July 1989. In addition to Uraz, the Istanbul team also signed Engin İpekoğlu, the shooting star among the Turkish goalkeepers. At Beşiktaş, he was not expected to make a comeback due to his injury and from his six-month break and therefore rather on the other goalkeepers İpekoğlu, Rade Zalad and Metin Akçevre .
After Uraz had not been taken into account in the squad planning until October 1989, he was loaned to league rivals Adana Demirspor , one of the two strongest clubs in his hometown Adana, for a loan fee of 200,000 lira . Since Demirspor lost his last game to Beşiktaş, of all places, with 0:10 just before the commitment of Uraz, and with this result had experienced the highest defeat in the history of the 1st Lig , Uraz immediately replaced the critically criticized goalkeeper Fatih Yılmaz . Since there was another Fatih in the team at Demirspor with Fatih Yılmaz and he was younger, Uraz was henceforth referred to by fans and the specialist press as the Büyük Fatih (dt: The great Fatih ) and Yılmaz as Küçük Fatih (dt: Little Fatih ). At Demirspor, Uraz found his way back to his old form and was elected to the team a few times during the season. The club, on the other hand, had troubled times as several players were occupied with roads. Uraz was also warned with a 50 million lira fine. Despite this punishment, he kept his regular place. But after his club missed relegation at the end of the season, Uraz returned to Beşiktaş.
Upon his return to Beşiktaş, Uraz was again put on the list of players to be either sold or loaned by head coach Gordon Milne . Uraz himself agreed and negotiated for the upcoming season with the clubs Karşıyaka SK , Altay Izmir and Göztepe Izmir . A little later, Beşiktaş even decided to let Uraz go free of charge in the event of interested parties. Uraz couldn't find an agreement with any club. Since Milne had not included him in the squad and Uraz did not agree to a contract termination with Beşiktaş, he remained without activity for a long time. At the end of October 1990 he was then taken back into the squad by Milne and took part in team training. In a test match against third division club Gaziosmanpaşaspor, for example, played the full length of the game. By the end of the season he was the third goalkeeper in the squad, but did not play a competitive game for Beşiktaş. Without commitment, he was at the end of the season with his team Turkish champions of the season 1990/91 .
Kayserispor
After Uraz 'contract with Beşiktaş had expired in the summer of 1991 and he received no extension, he moved to the second division Kayserispor on a free transfer . At this club he rose straight away to a high performer. With his team he finished the season on champions of the 2nd league and thus rose to the 1st league. Despite this success, in which Uraz had a share, his contract was not extended over the season.
Konyaspor and Gaziosmanpaşaspor
For the next season, Uraz moved to the first division club Konyaspor . Here he failed to prevail against the two other goalkeepers Adnan Erkan and Vukašin Petranović . After four league appearances and a first half of the season, Uraz left Konyaspor and moved to Istanbul's second division club Gaziosmanpaşaspor . For this club he played until the summer of 1995 and then ended his playing career.
National team
Uraz began his career with the Turkish national teams in 1978 during his time at Hacettepe GK with a commitment for the Turkish U-18 national team.
After his convincing performance at Samsunspor , he was nominated by the Turkish national coach Coşkun Özarı in 1985 for the Turkish national team . In this first game he was only on the bench, but made his international debut in his second nomination against Poland. From then on he was one of the regularly nominated players for the next three years and was set as a national goalkeeper with a few exceptions.
On October 14, 1987 Uraz played with the Turkish selection within the EM1988 - qualifying away against the English national team . Turkey lost this encounter with 8-0 exceptionally high. The Turkish selection had already lost three years earlier in the same place against England with the same result and had one of the harshest defeats in the association's history to date. As a result, the expectations before the game were correspondingly high. Uraz was unanimously recognized by the trade press and viewers as one of the main culprits for this defeat. According to his own statements, Uraz was traumatized for a long time after this defeat and the subsequent malice against himself and needed a certain amount of time to cope. In his club he was denigrated for a long time by the opposing fans with chants aimed at this 8-0 defeat.
Despite this bitter defeat, he remained the goalkeeper of the Turkish national team and convinces with good performances.
He made his last international match on November 30, 1988 against the GDR national soccer team . After he was unable to play for a long time in January 1989 after a serious accident with the Samsunspors team bus due to injury, he was not considered for a long time by the Turkish national team. Finally, Engin İpekoğlu ousted him both at his new club Beşiktaş Istanbul and in the national team.
Coaching career
After the end of his football career , Uraz took over the office of goalkeeping coach at Kayserispor and stayed in this position for one season. A year later he left this club and became head coach at Kütahyaspor .
From 1996 he began to work at Beşiktaş Istanbul as a goalkeeping coach and assisted the head coach John Toshack .
In the summer of 1999 he took over Kahramanmaraşspor as head coach and stayed in office for only two months. He then began to work as an assistant coach at Çanakkale Dardanelspor . He then worked at Fatih Karagümrük SK and Kocaelispor as head coach.
Between 2002 and 2006, he directed goalie camps for the Virginia Cavaliers and George Mason University .
From 2007 to 2008 he coached the football team of the Fatih Üniversitesi .
