Kocaelispor is a sports club in the Turkish city of İzmit . The club was founded in 1966 and played a total of 20 seasons in the Süper Lig in the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s . In the all-time table of the Süper Lig , the club is in 13th place. The club had its most successful first division season in the 1992/93 season , in which the club first reached the autumn championship and then fourth place in the table. In addition, they occupied fifth place in the table of the Süper Lig in the 1995/96 season . The two Turkish Cup victories in the 1996/97 and 2001/02 seasons are to be highlighted as further important successes .

history

founding

The most important department is football . The club was founded in 1966 from the merger of three clubs, Baçspor, İzmit Gençlik and Doğanspor. From 1980 to 1988, 1992 to 2003 Kocaelispor played first class , since in the Turk Telekom Lig A .

rise and fall

In the 2007/08 season , the team rose as champions of the TFF 1st Lig (second highest Turkish division) again in the Turkish Super Lig (highest Turkish division). Already in the first season the relegation failed and one rose again into the TFF 1. Lig. Here, too, the relegation failed, so that in summer 2010, for the first time in the club's history, they were relegated to the third highest division, the TFF 2. Lig . After two seasons in the 3rd division, they were relegated again, this time in the fourth highest division, the TFF 3rd Lig .

The club got into debt a lot, especially in the 2000s. In order to be able to rise again after relegation from the Süper Lig in summer 2003, without looking at the consequences, more and more investments were made in the team and new players were signed. So they achieved the hoped-for promotion to the Süper Lig in summer 2008. However, since relegation failed in the first season, the club got deeper and deeper into financial bottlenecks and was facing bankruptcy in summer 2011. In order to free the association from its debts, the association with the name Kocaelispor was given up. Instead, the intention was to rename the second team of the city of İzmit and the unofficial second team Kocaelispors, the third division club Korfez Belediyespor , in Kocaeli FK and to continue with this name as the successor team. The Kocaeli in the name and the club colors should clarify the status of the successor club of Kocaelispor. So Kocaelispor went bankrupt and all Kocaelispor players switched to Körfezspor for the new season. The proposed name, the new logo and the new club colors were not accepted by the Turkish Football Association . So an agreement was reached with the association on the name Körfez Futbol Kulübü , or Körfez FK for short, and on the club colors green-black-red.

Kocaelispor went bankrupt after these developments, with the creditors allowing the club to continue to participate in the game competition with young and reserve players. After the club went bankrupt and the creditors divided all club owners among themselves, it was announced at the end of 2012 that the club's own training ground Kocaeli Eğitim Vakfı (KEV) Sefa Sirmen Tesisleri had to be given up. The fourth division team has been organizing its training sessions in constantly changing sports facilities since summer 2012. In January 2013 the club's management started an SMS donation campaign with which to reduce the debt of around 70 million Turkish Lira and thus to relax the club financially.

Kocaelispor rose in the fourth division season 2013/14 by the 0-1 defeat on the 30th matchday against İstanbulspor from the TFF 3rd Lig and said goodbye to Turkish professional football after 48 years of membership.

Return to professional football

After saying goodbye to Turkish professional football in the summer of 2014, the club missed direct recovery. In the second season, the club confidently led the Boelgesel Amatoer Lig throughout the season and returned to professional football in the summer of 2016 with promotion to the TFF 3rd Lig .

Due to the lack of transfer payments of € 800,000 to the Serbian club Red Star Belgrade , FIFA gave Kocaelispor until November 13, 2016 to settle the outstanding payments. The world federation said that if Kocaelispor failed again, they would be punished with relegation.

Fans

In Kocaeli, the club still enjoys strong support, despite its rapid fall into amateur football, and the number of spectators is constant. The Ultras of Kocaelispor call themselves Hodri Meydan , in Turkey Hodri Meydan refers to areas in which everyone does what they want and in which no laws rule or are disregarded. There is a friendship between fans from Eskişehirspor and Antalyaspor .
