The Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi 1979/80 was the 17th season of the second highest Turkish league in professional men's football. It was started on August 26, 1979 with the 1st game day and ended on May 18, 1980 with the 30th game day.
In the 1979/80 season, the TFF 1st Lig was divided into two groups as in the previous season. In contrast to the previous season, however, the total number of teams was increased by one team, so that both groups were held with 16 teams. Further, the Gruppenbezeichnungsart preseason was with Red group and White group in an alphabetical with group A and group B changed. Since in the next season, the 1980/81 season , the third highest division, the 3rd Lig, should be abolished in Turkish professional football, the 1979/80 season was played without relegation. The top of the table of all two groups go straight to the higher Süper Lig . In addition to the top two in the table, the third and last promoted team was determined by a play-off encounter between the second-placed team.
At the beginning of the season, the three relegated teams from the Süper Lig Boluspor , Samsunspor , MKE Kırıkkalespor and the four newly promoted teams from the then third-rate TFF 3. Lig Giresunspor , Erzurumspor , Altınordu Izmir , Lüleburgazspor were added to the 25 teams remaining from the previous season .
Mersin İdman Yurdu reached the championship of Group A and thus, after a two-year absence, again participation in the Süper Lig . In Group B , Kocaelispor secured the championship and thus the first ascent in the club's history to the Süper Lig. Boluspor achieved direct promotion back to the Süper Lig through the play-off victory.
The Turkish Football Association had the champions of the league determined by a playoff between the two first-placed teams. In this encounter Kocaelispor faced Mersin İdman Yurdu and won the championship with a penalty shoot-out. However, the Turkish Football Association later declared both clubs to be champions of the TFF 1st Lig.
