The Türkiye 3. Futbol Ligi 1979/80 was the 13th season of the third highest Turkish division in professional men's football. It was started on August 26, 1979 with the 1st game day and ended on May 25, 1980 with the 28th and final game day. Because of the small number of teams, the season was divided into an autumn and spring season, so the teams played a double championship round with home and away games, which meant that each team competed four times against every other team in the course of a season.
The playing time was only played with promotion and relegation. At the end of the season it was subsequently decided that in the 1980/81 season in Turkish professional football the third highest division, the 3rd Lig, would be abolished and all teams in the 3rd Lig would be transferred to the next higher division, the 2nd Lig should. The 3rd Lig 1979/80 was the last season of the 3rd Lig for the time being, until the league was reintroduced in the summer of 1984 with the Türkiye 3rd Futbol Ligi 1984/85 .
Competition mode
As in the previous season, the league was played as a two-pronged league. It was only in the preseason that the previously three-pronged league was reduced to a two-pronged one. For the four newcomers of the previous season, the three second division relegators were added. For six relegated to the regional amateur league, no teams were added due to the lack of promoters from this amateur league. The total number of teams decreased by seven teams compared to the previous season. In contrast to the previous season, the two groups were no longer referred to as group red and group white , but as group A and group B and designed with eight and ten teams respectively. Originally, as in the previous season, the two first and second place winners of both groups should go straight to the second league . The bottom of the table in Group A, which consists of eight teams, and the last two in Group B should meanwhile relegate to the regional amateur league.
At the beginning of the season, the three relegated teams from the 2nd Lig Gençlerbirliği Ankara , Konyaspor and Beykozspor , and from the regional amateur league Kütahyaspor and Adalet SK were added to the 13 teams remaining from the previous season .
Tarsus İdman Yurdu ( Group A ) and Izmirspor ( Group B ) achieved the championship of the 3rd Lig in their groups and thus direct promotion to the 2nd Lig . The two second placed Hatayspor ( Group A ) and Karagümrük SK ( Group B ) also achieved direct promotion to the 2nd Lig.
At the end of the season the group A Çorumspor and from the group B Karşıyaka SK , Adalet SK were determined as relegated to the regional amateur league.
After the season had ended and all promoted and relegated teams had been determined, the Turkish Football Association decided to dissolve the 3rd league. So the 3rd Lig was merged with the 2nd Lig. The extended 2nd league should then be played out on three tracks and regionally in the future. The reasons given for this restructuring were the increasing costs of the away games, the difficulties caused by the inadequate road network and the high flight costs. The national football association later decided to switch to a four-track league.
