The Türkiye 3. Futbol Ligi 2000/01 was the 30th season of the third highest Turkish division in professional men's football. It began on September 3, 2001 with the 1st day of play and ended on May 27, 2001 with the 32nd and final day of the game. This season is the last season for the time being in the third highest division, which was called the 3rd Lig. In the following season, Turkish professional football was expanded from a three-tier system to a four-tier system. In this new graduation, the third highest division was now titled as Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi Bategorisi, while the newly created fourth highest division was henceforth run as the 3rd Lig or TFF 3rd Lig .

Competition mode

In the 2001/02 season, the TFF 1. Lig was played as an eight-track league, as in the previous season. Furthermore, the total number of teams remained at 134. These 134 clubs played in eight groups with 16 and 17 teams each, no longer as in the previous season for promotion to the 2nd Lig or against relegation to the Regional Amateur League, but to remain in the third highest division or relegation to the fourth highest division introduced in summer 2001, the TFF 3rd Lig or the Regional Amateur League. The division of the league was carried out regionally, so that mostly all teams in a group came from neighboring or close to one another provinces . All first placed went straight to the 2nd Lig , while there was no relegation.

Since Turkish professional football was to undergo fundamental changes with the 2001/02 season, preparations for this change were made in the 2000/01 season. Up until the summer of 2001, professional football in Turkey consisted of three leagues: the top division, the single-track Türkiye 1. Futbol Ligi , the two-class five-track and two-tier Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi and the third-class, eight-track Türkiye 3. Futbol Ligi . For the 2001/02 season, professional football was expanded to four professional leagues. While the Türkiye 1. Futbol Ligi remained unchanged, the Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi was now in the second highest division, the Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi Aategorisi (to German: 2. Football League Category A of Turkey ), and the third highest division , the Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi Bategorisi (to German: 2. Football League Category B of Turkey ), divided. The subordinate Türkiye 3rd Futbol Ligi was henceforth the fourth highest division, the TFF 3rd Lig . The third highest division of the 2001/02 season should consist partly of teams from the second highest and the third highest season of the preseason. The top three of all groups in the third division season 2000/01 managed to stay in the next season. The three or last placed in all groups relegated to the Regional Amateur League, while the remaining teams relegated to the newly introduced fourth-highest division. From the second highest division , all teams from the relegation groups were relegated, which could not reach one of the first two places in the table.

Beginning of the season were the remaining from the previous season 108 Teams nine relegated from the 2. Lig Zeytinburnuspor , Kusadasispor , Marmarisspor , Pendikspor , Kasımpaşa Istanbul , Giresunspor , Orduspor , Adiyamanspor , Malatya Belediyespor , the 17 newcomers Bitlis Özgüzelderespor , Batman Demirspor , Rize Çayspor , Arsinspor , Karabulak Gençlikspor , Şanlıurfa Belediyespor , Osmaniyespor , Turhalspor , Altındağ Belediyespor , etimesgut belediyespor , Eski Spor , Konya Yolspor , Yalovaspor , İzmit Bekirpaşaspor , Tofaş SK , Fatih Karagümrük SK , Geliboluspor added. The newcomers had been accepted as champions from the then fourth-class regional amateur leagues and were allowed to take part in the third division.

Cizrespor , Silopi Cudispor , Hakkarispor ( Group 1 ), Iğdır Belediyespor , Bulancakspor , Erzincanspor ( Group 2 ), Adana Demirspor , Kahramanmarasspor , Mezitlispor ( Group 3 ), Tokatspor , Ankara Demirspor , Çankırı Belediyespor ( Group 4 ), Usakspor , Kütahyaspor , Kepez Genpaspor ( group 5 ), Mustafakemalpaşaspor , Marmarisspor , Manisaspor ( group 6 ), Maltepespor , Sapancaspor , İnegölspor ( group 7 ), Yıldırım Bosnaspor , Küçükköyspor , Zeytinburnuspor ( group 8 ) reached the first three places in the table in their groups third highest Turkish league. Championship of the 3rd Lig and thus direct promotion to the 2nd Lig .

At the start of the season, several clubs changed their names. Yüksekova Belediyespor was renamed to Yüksekova Cilospor , Çankırı Belediyespor to Saran Keskinspor and Side Genpaspor to Kepez Genpaspor .
