history
Foundation and the first years
The club was founded in 1923 under the name Maltepe Gençler Birliği or Maltepe Gençlerbirliği in his home district of Maltepe in the Turkish city of Istanbul. Under this name, the team played in the lower Istanbul amateur leagues until 1949. Then the club name changed to Maltepe Gençlikspor . Later the two smaller clubs Maltepe Güneşspor and then Maltepe Ağaspor joined this club and changed the club name to the current form.
Entry into professional football and the third division years
Unlike most of the smaller Istanbul district clubs, Maltepespor did not participate in Turkish professional football with the reintroduction of the third highest professional football league, the 3rd league , in the summer of 1984. Rather, in 1989, through promotion to this league, he entered Turkish professional football. In this league, Maltepespor played continuously for the next 20 years and with a few exceptions always occupied place in the table in the middle or lower third of the table. In the Türkiye 3. Futbol Ligi 2000/01 , the club even reached the championship of the 3rd Lig for the first time in its club history. Normally, the championship would lead to promotion to the TFF 1st Lig . However, since the Turkish professional football operation was transferred from a three-tier league system to a four-tiered system in the summer of 2001, the championship only meant staying in the 3rd division, which was henceforth referred to as the TFF 2nd Lig .
Relegation to amateur football
In the TFF 2. Lig 2008/09 Maltepespor missed relegation and rose after twenty years of membership in the third division in the fourth highest Turkish division, the TFF 3. Lig , from. In the first season in this league, the team also missed relegation here and was relegated to the regional amateur league.
Return to professional football and modern times
Just one year after relegation to the regional amateur league in 2010, Maltepespor reached the championship of this league and returned to Turkish professional football with promotion to the TFF 3rd Lig.
