Edirnespor is a Turkish football club from Edirne . The club currently plays in the Edirne Süper Amatoer Lig , but was previously represented for many years in the second-highest division in Turkey .

history

The club initially played in an amateur league, but was added directly to the second highest division in Turkey after the union with Meriçspor and Suspor . Rahmi Akıncı was elected as the first president of the association. He signed the former Turkish international Naci Erdem as coach of the team. The club's first game was a friendly against Altay Izmir , which they lost 2-0. The club's first professional game was a game in the former Turkish Cup tournament Spor Toto Kupası against Bursaspor . Edirnespor lost the game 0-1.

The first league game was played against Medical Park Antalyaspor . The game ended in a 1-1 draw. The team finished the first season in 5th place.

Before the start of the new season, the club agreed on friendly games against two top Turkish clubs Beşiktaş Istanbul and Galatasaray Istanbul . The game against Beşiktaş Istanbul took place on February 11, 1968 and Edirnespor won 1-0. On April 23, 1968, the team played against Galatasaray Istanbul and triumphed 2-0.

In the season 1968/69 the club had to struggle with many problems, the coach Naci Erdem resigned in the middle of the season and Ali Etüd was signed as the new coach. In the last few weeks of the season, Naci Erdem returned to his office, but could no longer keep the club in the second division.

After relegation to the third Turkish division , Atilla Bilgin became the club's new president. The first season in the third division ended in midfield. After being unable to move up to the second division for many years, the club signed important players from Istanbul's top clubs and was first in the third division in 1977/78, which meant they were promoted back to the second division after a long time. After promotion, the club sold Arda Denizeri, the team's most important player, to Beşiktaş Istanbul.

The club played in the second division until the 1989/90 season, when they were relegated back to the third division.

At the beginning of the 1993/94 season, important players such as Hakan Keleş and Selim Özer were committed again and rose again to the second division as the winner of the third division. After the 1994/95 season, the club was on the verge of being promoted to the top Turkish league , but was bottom of the group in the play-offs and since then played in the second division until the 1998/99 season.

The club rose after the 1998/99 season because of technical and financial problems in the third division and spent four years there and then rose after the 2002/03 season in the amateur league.

The club has been represented in the Edirne Süper Amatoer Lig since 2003.
