Şenol Çorlu (born December 3, 1961 in Ankara ) is a former Turkish football player and coach. Through his many years of work for Fenerbahçe Istanbul , he is very strongly associated with this club. Fan and club members regard him as one of the most important players in club history. With 207 first division appearances for Fenerbahçe, he is the player with the fourteenth most frequent Süper Lig appearances in the club's history. Furthermore, with his 51 first division goals, he is the club's twelfth most successful goalscorer.

After Trabzonspor Şenol Ustaömer moved to Fenerbahçe in the summer of 1988 , Çorlu was henceforth known as Büyük Şenol (in English: The great Şenol ). At that time it was common in Turkish football to only name footballers by their first names. The older of the players was referred to as the big and the younger as the small. In order to be able to distinguish Çorlu from Ustaömer, the younger Ustaömer was called Küçük Şenol (in English: The little Şenol ).

Çorlu began playing club football in the youth department of the capital city club Petrol Ofisi SK , the sports team of the state oil production company. Here he rose to the professional squad in the second half of the 1970s. After the club missed relegation in the Türkiye 3rd Futbol Ligi in the summer of 1979 and had to relegate to the regional amateur league, Çorlu left the club in the direction of the first division Orduspor . Despite the new environment and his young age, he quickly gained a regular place here and was promoted to the U-21 national team. After Orduspor surprisingly missed relegation in the summer of 1981 and had to relegate to the 2nd division, Çorlu also left this club and hired the first division newcomer Sakaryaspor . This club had made it with some seasoned players such as Coşkun Demirbakan , Turgay İnal , Zafer Göncüler and many young players in the summer of 1981 for the first time in his career in the 1st Lig . The team at the time consisted of young and then unknown players such as Nezihi Tosuncuk , Oğuz Çetin , Bahri Kaya , Aykut Yiğit , all of whom would later become important personalities in Turkish football. In this environment, the team finished the game season 1981/82 on the 5th place in the table and advanced to the surprise team of the season. The team thus achieved the best first division placement in the club's history. Çorlu formed the storm of his team with Bahri Kaya, Aykut Yiğit and Tuna Güneysu and rose to a national team player with his performances. In the next two seasons he established himself more and more as a service provider, so that he became one of the most sought-after youngsters in the league.

In the summer of 1984 Çorlu moved to Istanbul's top club Fenerbahçe SK . Here, too, he immediately established himself as a regular player and formed a successful strike team with his strike partners İlyas Tüfekçi , Selçuk Yula and Dušan Pešić . At the end of the season, the team ended the season tied to Beşiktaş Istanbul due to the better goal difference as champions. In addition, the President's Cup and the Navy Cup were won this season . The following season was disappointing for Fenerbahçe. The only ray of hope was the team in the European Champions Cup. Here you met the reigning French champion Girondins Bordeaux . At that time, the relationship between Turkey and France was very tense because of the attacks by the Asala terrorist organization . Furthermore, the Turkish teams were eliminated without exception in the European club cup competitions in the first round. Under these circumstances, Bordeaux was considered a huge favorite. In the first game, which was played in Bordeaux, Fenerbahçe surprisingly won 3-2 in a thrilling game. Çorlu was one of the best players of the game and scored the important 2-1 opening goal for his team, which was also Fenerbahçe's 50th goal in the European club cup competitions. The second leg, in which Çorlu's goal was not recognized, ended 0-0. As a result, Fenerbahçe surprisingly prevailed against Bordeaux in this explosive clash and was therefore frenetically celebrated at home. Since the striker Srebrenko Repčić left the club before this season , Yula was out due to injury and Tüfekçi plagued form weaknesses, Çorlu was used as a center forward. In this role he scored 14 goals in the league and was by far the most successful goalscorer of his team. The next two seasons Çorlu's team missed the championship.

For the new season, Todor Veselinović, the master coach from the 1984/85 season , was committed. In addition, the club signed an international star with the German goalkeeper Toni Schumacher . Furthermore, the club's management continued to invest in the team and signed Şenol Ustaömer , Oğuz Çetin , Aykut Kocaman , Turhan Sofuoğlu , Hasan Vezir , Hakan Tecimer and Orhan Kapucu stars and important youngsters of the time. With this team Fenerbahçe played an outstanding season. The season ended ten points ahead of runner-up Galatasaray. In addition, the team scored 103 goals over the entire season, setting a new goal record for the Süper Lig . This team went into the club annals as the championship team with 103 goals . Çorlu lost his regular place relatively quickly to the three strikers Rıdvan Dilmen , Kocaman and Vezir and only made 17 league appearances by the end of the season. After Vezir surprisingly switched to arch-rivals Galatasaray Istanbul in the next season and Dilmen was out due to injury for a long time, Çorlu rose again to become a regular. Together with Kocaman and Erdi Demir he formed the storm of his club. With 18 goals in 32 league games, he was the most successful goalscorer of his and experienced the most goal-scoring season of his career. His team was runner-up behind arch rivals Beşiktaş. The next season it failed Çorlu to repeat his previous year's performance. Although he remained a regular player for a long time, he had to give way to his recovered dilemmas in some games. After these two unsuccessful years, the club signed striker Tanju Çolak from arch rivals Galatasaray and loved Brazilian Gérson Caçapa for the summer . The new coach Jozef Vengloš decided in the storm for the players Kocaman, Çolak, Vokrri and Caçapa. So Çorlu only made two competitive appearances until the winter break.

In the winter break of the 1991/92 season, Çorlu was finally loaned to the second division team Antalyaspor . In March 1992, he was brought back within the same season. With a farewell game in which Fenerbahçe and Trabzonspor met, he finally ended his playing career in the summer of 1992.

National team

Çorlu's national team career began when he was with Petrol Ofisi SK . Here he fell to the person in charge of the Turkish U-18 national team who nominated him for an upcoming test match. So Çorlu made his general international debut against Poland U-18s. After this debut, Çorlu played two more times for the Turkish U-18 selection.

In April 1981 he was nominated for the first time in the squad of the Turkish U-21 national team and played in the game against the Czechoslovak U-21 national team for the first time for the U-21 of his country. By 1984 he completed nine more U-21 missions. In most of these games, however, Çorlu was over 21 years old.

In 1981 he was the reigning National Coach Fethi Demircan in the cadre of senior national Turkish appointed and gave the World Cup - qualifying match against the national team of the USSR his senior international debut. By the spring of 1986 Birant came to 14 more international appearances.

Coaching career

A year after retiring from his career, Çorlu started his coaching career by starting to work as a junior coach at Fenerbahçe Istanbul . After about two years, he accepted the position of assistant coach at Karagümrük SK in November 1995 . Just two months later, he inherited the head coach and was in charge of the club until the end of the season. In October of the same year he took over Beylerbeyi SK . However, he only looked after this club for two weeks. After a short co-trainer activity at Çanakkale Dardanelspor , he trained the clubs Edirnespor , Aydınspor and Malatyaspor as head coach.

In the 1999/2000 season he took over the position of assistant coach at Fenerbahçe Istanbul and assisted his former teammate Rıdvan Dilmen . This did not have a coaching license at the time, which is why Çorlu was formally listed as head coach. After Dilmen resigned his position at the end of September 1999, Çorlu also left the club in October.

After Fenerbahçe, Çorlu trained the clubs Konya SÜ Endüstri SK and Sapanca Gençlikspor as head coach. In 2006 he started working again at Fenerbahçe as a youth coach. He was later promoted to coordinator of the entire youth department.
