Naci Erdem (born January 28, 1931 in Istanbul ) is a former Turkish football player and coach. Through his many years of work for Fenerbahçe Istanbul , he is strongly associated with this club. On the fan and club side, he is considered one of the most important players in club history. He is also a symbolic figure for Fatih Karagümrük , where he was active as a player, coach and club president. He was part of the Turkey squad during the 1954 World Cup .

Player career

society

Erdem started playing football on the street and then played for a short time in the youth of Fatih Karagümrük . He was then accepted into the professional squad and quickly established himself as a regular player. At that time Karagümrük was equal to the three big Istanbul clubs Fenerbahçe, Beşiktaş Istanbul and Galatasaray Istanbul and had several national players in his ranks. He played for this club until 1953 and had to start his military service a year beforehand. In the first year it was still possible to work for Karagümrük, but not in the second year of his military service. In 1953 he played in the military league for the air defense team, the Havagücü .

In the same year he then moved to Fenerbahçe. Here he fought for a regular place straight away and was twice champion of the regional İstanbul Futbol Ligi with his team . In the summer of 1959, the first championship of the newly founded and nationwide Süper Lig was won . The team managed to win the championship again for two years. He was also the team captain at Fenerbahçe in recent years. In the winter of 1962 he announced the end of his career at Fenerbahçe due to injury.

After his injuries healed better than hoped, he decided to make a comeback. He started a fresh start with the then first division club Beyoğluspor . After this club missed relegation at the end of the season, Erdem decided to move.

For the 1964/65 season he was hired by Galatasaray Istanbul . Here, too, he became a regular player straight away and was able to win the Turkish Football Cup for the first time in his footballing career in his first season . After he was active for another season for the Red-Yellows and was able to win the Turkish Football Cup again, he finally ended his active football career.

In 1966 he took over the second division Edirnespor as a player-coach and was still partially active as a player for a year.

National team

He also took part in the 1954 World Cup with the Turkish national team. At the end of the group stage, they finished second in the table, tied with the German selection . Although they had the better goal difference, according to the rules of the time, the group runners-up was decided by a playoff between these two teams. In this encounter, which Germany won 7-2, Erdem made his international debut.

From then on he was one of the players who, with a few exceptions, were regularly appointed to the national team. He played for Turkey in the qualifying rounds of the first-ever European Championship in 1960 , the World Championship in 1962 , the European Championship in 1964 and the World Championship in 1966 . He completed a total of 34 games for the Ay-Yıldızlılar and played three of these games as team captain.

After the devastating 6-0 home defeat in the qualifying game of the 1966 World Cup against the Czechoslovak selection , he was no longer nominated for the national team.

Following his active career, he coached several teams in the lower Turkish leagues.
