The Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi Bategorisi 2001/02 was the 31st season of the third highest Turkish division in professional men's football. It was started on August 26, 2001 with the 1st matchday and ended on May 12, 2002 with the 34th and final matchday. With this season, Turkish professional football was expanded from a three-tier system to a four-tier system. In this new staggering, the third highest division was now titled as Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi Bategorisi, while the newly created fourth highest division was henceforth run as 3. Lig or TFF 3. Lig . The Turkish state sports toto company Spor Toto secured the naming rights of the league for a few years, which is why this season was called Spor Toto Türkiye 3rd Futbol Ligi 2001/02 .

Competition mode

With the 2001/02 season, Turkish professional football underwent fundamental changes. So far, professional football in Turkey has consisted of three leagues: the top division, the single-track Türkiye 1. Futbol Ligi , the second-rate five-track and two-tier Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi and the third-rate, eight-track Türkiye 3. Futbol Ligi . For the 2001/02 season, professional football was expanded to four professional leagues. While the Türkiye 1. Futbol Ligi remained unchanged, the Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi was now in the second highest division, the Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi Aategorisi (to German: 2. Football League Category A of Turkey ), and the third highest division , the Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi Bategorisi (to German: 2. Football League Category B of Turkey ), divided. The subordinate Türkiye 3rd Futbol Ligi was henceforth the fourth highest division, the TFF 3rd Lig .

In addition, the third-highest division was fundamentally reformed in the 2001/03 season. Instead of the champions being promoted directly to the 2nd league in an eight-track league, as before, the league was played in three stages this season. In the 1st stage, the league was played in a qualifying round (Turkish Kademe Grupları ) in five groups of ten teams each with home and away games. After the end of Stage 1, the first two teams from all groups were in a common group, the promotion round (Turkish yükselme Grubu ) was added, and played here by the rise in the second division the henceforth than 2. Lig A Kategorisi was designated . The remaining teams in the five groups of the qualifying round played in an unchanged group constellation now in a relegation round (Turkish Düşme Grupları ) against relegation to the 3rd Lig . Both the promotion round and the relegation round represented the 2nd stage and were played with a round trip. The teams in the first two places in the promotion round rose directly to the 2nd Lig Aategorisi and the teams in the last two places in the table of all groups in the relegation round relegated to the TFF 3rd Lig . While the points from the qualifying round were not taken into the promotion round, they were counted unchanged in the relegation round.

In order to increase the attractiveness of the league and to prevent many teams from securing relegation very early on and then playing aimlessly in front of empty ranks, it was decided to play a third stage in the form of a play-off in addition to the existing constellation. In these play-offs, the third and last promoted team should be determined. The teams ranked from three to five and all the promotion round group winners the descent groups should in the knockout system play out the last climber. The play-offs were played at the end of the group stage in a city that was neutral for all eight teams.

Beginning of the season were the remaining from the previous season 24 teams, the 26 relegated from the 2. Lig Mersin İdmanyurdu , Gaziantep BB , Kartalspor , Eskişehirspor , Karşıyaka SK , Yeni Nazillispor , Bucaspor , Ispartaspor , Yeni Turgutluspor , Gaziosmanpaşaspor , Darıca Gençlerbirliği , Sarıyer SK , Güngören Belediyespor , Üsküdar Anadolu 1908 SK , Kirklarelispor , Konya Mobellaspor , Türk Telekomspor , KDC Karabükspor , MKE Kirikkalespor , Artvin Hopaspor , Amasyaspor , Boluspor , Sanliurfaspor , Cizrespor , Agrispor , Vanspor added. The newcomers had been accepted as champions from the then fourth-class regional amateur leagues and were allowed to take part in the third division.

Vestel Manisaspor ended the season as champions and thus managed to return to the second highest Turkish league after seven years of abstinence. The 2nd place in the table occupied Mersin İdman Yurdu and thus achieved direct promotion to the 2nd Lig Aategorisi . The play-offs were carried out as a neutral city in Denizli and played among the teams Şanlıurfaspor , Adana Demirspor , Türk Telekomspor , Darıca Gençlerbirliği , KDÇ Karabükspor , Karşıyaka SK , Cizrespor and Kartalspor . In the play-off final, Adana Demirspor prevailed 2-1 against Karşıyaka and, after four years of abstinence, returned to participation in the 2nd Lig Aategorisi. Relegated at the end of the season were Zeytinburnuspor , Sapancaspor ( Group 1 ), Ispartaspor , Yeni Turgutluspor ( Group 2 ), Konya Mobellaspor , Kırklarelispor ( Group 3 ), Boluspor , Artvin Hopaspor ( Group 4 ) and Vanspor , Ağrıspor ( Group 5 ).

At the start of the season, several clubs changed their names. Manisaspor was renamed Vestel Manisaspor , Kepez Genpaspor in Antalya Kepezspor , Marmarisspor in Marmaris Belediye Gençlikspor , Uşakspor in Umpaş Uşakspor and Öz Sahrayıceditspor in Üsküdar Anadolu 1908 SK .

From this season onwards, the direct comparison was used in the event of a tie .
