Vanspor was a Turkish sports club from the eastern Anatolian city of Van . The club was founded in 1974 and in the 1990s played for four seasons in the Süper Lig , the top Turkish league. In the all-time table of this league , the club is in 50th place. In the early 2000s, the club said goodbye to Turkish football within four years and then broke up. The association is often mistakenly confused with the association Van Büyükşehir Belediyespor , which for a few years also claimed its successor after changing its name to Belediye Vanspor . However, there are two separate clubs that were at times in strong competition.
history
Foundation of an association
The Vanspor club was founded in 1974 through the merger of the two amateur clubs Van Gençlikspor with the club colors black and white and Van Şengençlerspor with the club colors yellow and blue. The club colors were black from Gençlikspor and yellow from Şengençlerspor.
After the club was founded, Vanspor played in the regional amateur leagues.
Entry into professional football
In the summer of 1983 the club achieved promotion to the Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi , which was then the second highest Turkish professional league, and thus the first participation in professional football.
Promotion to the 1st Lig
After the club played almost exclusively against relegation for about a decade after being promoted to the 2nd Futbol Ligi and had always occupied table positions in the lower half of the table, he surprisingly played for promotion in the 1993/94 second division season . The season ended the club under the leadership of head coach Enver Katip finally as third in the table and thus secured their first participation in the 1st Lig , the then highest Turkish league.
In its first first division season, the 1994/95 season , the team reached relegation early and reached 12th place in the table. The following season, the club again played against relegation for a long time and only secured relegation on the last day of the game. In this season, the 1995/96 season , the club played a key role in the decision of the championship. In the away game on April 19, 1996, the team surprisingly defeated the leaders and biggest title contenders Trabzonspor 1-0 and prevented this club from being able to break away from their closest rivals Fenerbahçe Istanbul . On the final day of the match, the team lost 3-0 away to the new leaders Fenerbahçe and played a key role in this competitive game, with which Fenerbahçe secured the championship. During this season, the club also produced the first Turkish national team player in club history, Erkan Avseren .
Relegation and direct promotion to the 1st Lig
After the club was able to keep in the league in the 1996/97 season , he rose at the end of the 1997/98 season as bottom of the table in the 2nd Futbol Ligi. Relegated to the 2nd Turkish league, reached the end of the season under the leadership of head coach Rıdvan Dilmen the second division championship and thus direct promotion to the 1st league.
After returning to the 1st Lig, the club hired a new head coach with Samet Aybaba . Under this coach and his successors, the club occupied a relegation place for almost the entire season and was determined early on as the first relegated.
Systemic relegation to the TFF 2nd Lig
Since Turkish professional football was to undergo fundamental changes in the 2001/02 season, preparations for this change were made in the 2000/01 season. Up until now, professional football in Turkey consisted of three leagues: the top division, the single-track Türkiye 1. Futbol Ligi , the second-rate five-track and two-tier Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi and the third-rate, eight-track Türkiye 3. Futbol Ligi . For the 2001/02 season, professional football was expanded to four professional leagues. While the Türkiye 1. Futbol Ligi remained unchanged, the Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi was now in the second highest division, the Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi Aategorisi (to German: 2. Football League Category A of Turkey ), and the third highest division , the Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi Bategorisi (to German: 2. Football League Category B of Turkey ), divided. The subordinate Türkiye 3rd Futbol Ligi was henceforth the fourth highest division, the TFF 3rd Lig . Those teams, which only occupied a middle place in the table in the second division season 2000/01 , were assigned to the newly created third-highest Turkish division, the 2. Lig, for the coming season. Vanspor, which had finished the league in 6th place in the table, had to relegate to the 2nd Lig due to the system.
Free fall and dissolution
After relegation within two years from the 1st Lig to the 2nd Lig Bategorisi, the third highest division, the club also experienced a difficult season this season. Since the club had not paid some outstanding salaries for former players, the national association imposed a three-point deduction on the club. The club finished the season as penultimate and rose for the third time within three years. Relegated to the TFF 3rd Lig , the fourth highest Turkish professional league, the club could not cope with its financial problems and was relegated to the bottom of the table. With that he left the club after 40 years of the Turkish professional league company.
After saying goodbye to the Turkish professional league operation, the club disbanded. In the summer of 2007 the association Van Belediyespor rose and Belediye Vanspor prepared the first takeover of the naming rights of the historical Vanspor. This takeover or successor business was not an agreement with those responsible for the historical Vanspors. Finally, Belediye Vanspor moved away from this takeover idea in summer 2014 and renamed itself Van Büyükşehir Belediyespor .
Club colors and crests
The first club colors were set to yellow-black when the club was founded. The yellow was taken from the club colors of Van Şengençlerspor , the first of the two predecessor clubs and the black of Van Gençlikspor , the second predecessor club. In addition to these two club colors, the logo was made up of the other two club colors of the previous clubs, white and blue. In the center, the silhouette of Lake Van , the largest lake in Turkey and one of the landmarks of the city and the associated province , was depicted.
For the 1982/83 season the club colors were changed to yellow-black and in 1997 to blue-white for the last time.
