İrfan Buz (born April 15, 1967 in Istanbul ) is a former German - Turkish soccer player and current coach .
Childhood and family
Buz was born in the Turkish metropolis of Istanbul in 1967 and moved to Germany with his family in 1971 as a guest worker family . Here he began playing club football at the age of nine in the youth department of SV 04 Attendorn . He then played in the youth departments of various other clubs.
Player career
Buz played amateur soccer in Germany and was spotted here in 1989 by the talent scouts of Istanbul's first division club Sarıyer SK . Then they made Buz the offer to take part in a trial training session of the club lasting several weeks in Istanbul. Buz agreed and was found good enough after two weeks by head coach Ahmet Suat Özyazıcı . In 1989 he received his first professional contract. Since Sarıyer had a strong squad in which there were several former and current national players, Buz only played a first division in two years. But he was in the squad at the most successful time in the club's history and reached fifth place in the table with his club in the 1989/90 season and even fourth place in the table in the following.
After he had completed only one league assignment here in two years, he left Sarıyer in the summer of 1991 and moved to the second division side Vanspor . At this club he found his way around better and played as a regular player at times. At the end of the season he moved again. This time he went to league rivals Sakaryaspor . For this club he played regularly in his first season, so that he completed 19 league appearances by the end of the season. In the 1993/94 season he was no longer considered in the team squad, so that he was loaned from November 1993 to the end of the season to the Istanbul third division club Maltepespor . At the end of the season he returned to Sakaryaspor. After he had only played three games by the summer of 1995, his contract was not renewed. According to his own statements, he was then confronted with the problem of having to do his military service in the course of his career. Since, from his point of view, this would not have been beneficial for his career, he decided to return to Germany.
In Germany he started to work as a player-coach at Barışspor Hackenberg, and ended his playing career after three years.
Coaching career
At his last player station, at Barışspor Hackenberg, he worked as a player-coach for three years and then looked after the club for two years as head coach.
After he found pleasure in the coaching activity, he acquired all the necessary coaching licenses. In September 2010 he took over the SpVg Olpe and coached it until the summer of 2013. During this time, in the summer of 2012, he received the offer to work as an assistant coach for the Turkish first division club Samsunspor . But he refused this offer. After working for SpVg Olpe, he was introduced as head coach at FC Iserlohn 46/49 in July of the same year .
In mid-August, Christoph Daum offered him to assist him as an assistant coach for the Turkish first division club Bursaspor . Buz accepted the offer and moved to Turkey. After Daum was fired from Bursaspor in March 2014, Buz took over the post of head coach on an interim basis. In his first game in this activity, on March 25, 2014 in the cup semi-final against Galatasaray Istanbul away with a 2-2 win, he achieved a first respectable success. The next day, Bursaspor announced that they would work with Buz as head coach at least until the end of the season. After Buz had finished the season with Bursaspor in 8th place in the table, he announced his departure from Bursaspor.
At the end of September 2014 he took over the first division club Gençlerbirliği Ankara . After four league defeats in a row, the last of which against the Eskişehirspor club , which is managed by Michael Skibbe , Buz and his entire coaching staff were dismissed by the club's management in mid-February 2015.
In mid-October 2015, he took over the Turkish second division club Yeni Malatyaspor and led him confidently to relegation at the end of the season. At the end of the season, the club management could not agree on any further cooperation with him and announced the end of the coaching activity. Another collaboration was announced before the start of the season. Buz's team played for the championship from the start of the season and became the surprise team of the second division season 2016/17 . His team took over the championship lead on matchday three and kept it with two interruptions for 25 matchdays until the last matchday. Yeni Malatyaspor lost 4-0 away to their direct rivals Sivasspor and so awarded the championship to this club, but the first league promotion in the club's history was secured. Despite this greatest success in the club's history to date, the club's management decided against further cooperation with Buz, only informed him by phone and introduced Ertuğrul Sağlam as the new coach a few weeks after this separation .
