Saffet Akbaş (born September 8, 1968 in Istanbul ) is a former Turkish football player and coach. Due to his many years of work for Fenerbahçe Istanbul , he is associated with this club. Since during his time at Fenerbahçe with Saffet Sancaklı there was another Saffet in the team squad and this was older, Akbaş was henceforth known as Küçük Saffet ("Small Saffet") and Sancaklı as Büyük Saffet ("Large Saffet").

Player career

society

Akbaş went through the youth department of the Istanbul sports club Gaziosmanpaşaspor and was included in the professional squad with a professional contract in the course of the 1988/89 season. In his first season he was more of a reservist and was only used sporadically. With the 1989/90 season he gradually gained a regular place at the then third division team. At the end of the season he finished with his team the 3rd Futbol Ligi as champions and was involved in the first ascent in the club's history to the 2nd Futbol Ligi , the second highest Turkish league at the time. After Akbaş had been active for Gaziosmanpaşaspor in the 2nd Turkish league for two seasons, he moved to Ayvalıkgücü within the league in the summer of 1992 .

For Ayvalıkgücü he only played one season and was then committed by the second division Karşıyaka SK . Here he quickly established himself as a regular player and completed 25 league games. Since his club had missed relegation in the 1st Lig in the summer of 1994 and Akbaş wanted to continue playing in the 1st Lig, he moved within this league to the East Turkish representative Vanspor . At this club, too, he immediately became a regular player and top performer.

In the summer of 1995, the Turkish top club Fenerbahçe Istanbul interested in Akbaş and signed him in June 1995. With this club he was able to win the TSYD Istanbul Cup , which was held before the season, just a few weeks after his move . In his first season he was used by Brazilian head coach Carlos Alberto Parreira in eleven league games and played over 90 minutes in seven of these games. In these missions he knew how to convince and was nominated once for the Turkish national team . With his club he finished the season as a Turkish champion . In his second season for Fenerbahçe Akbaş rose to a regular player and completed 30 of the possible 34 league games his team. The next season he lost his regular place and was then used as a substitute several times. After Joachim Löw had taken over as coach at Fenerbahçe in the 1998/99 season , Akbaş was only used as a regular player in seven games and then no longer considered in the team planning. For the second half of the season he was loaned to league rivals MKE Ankaragücü . At the end of the season he returned to Fenerbahçe and was kept in the squad by the head coach. This season Akbaş was used in ten league games. For the new season he was removed from the squad by the new head coach Mustafa Denizli and loaned to the second division club Diyarbakırspor for one season. With this club he was promoted to the first Turkish league through the runner-up.

In summer 2001 Akbaş left Fenerbahçe after six years and moved to city and league rivals İstanbulspor . At this crisis-ridden club, he played as a regular for the next four years. In addition to his top service activities, he was also appointed team captain during these four years. In this function, he held the team together despite unpaid salary payments and made a significant contribution to the fact that the club could exist in the first division for four years despite all the imponderables. After the club missed relegation in the summer of 2005, Akbaş ended his career.

National team

After Akbaş had performed well at his club, he was nominated in December 1996 by national coach Mustafa Denizli as part of a World Cup 1998 qualifier against the Welsh national team in the squad of the Turkish national team . In this encounter he came on in the 87th minute for İlker Yağcıoğlu , making his international debut . By the fall of 1999 he was nominated ten more times and completed five more international matches.
