Vefa Spor kulübü , Vefa SK for short or more rarely just Vefaspor , is a Turkish football club from Istanbul . It is named after the district of Vefa and the local Vefa high school. The club was a founding member of the top Turkish league and played a total of 14 seasons in the Süper Lig in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s . In the all-time table of the Süper Lig , the club is in 30th place. With this placement, the club is after Fenerbahçe Istanbul , Galatasaray Istanbul , Beşiktaş Istanbul , İstanbulspor and Sarıyer SK, the sixth most successful club in the city of Istanbul that has ever played in the top Turkish league.

history

Vefa SK was founded in 1908 under the name "Vefa İdman Yurdu" and soon established itself in Istanbul football, which at the time was still based on amateur statutes. The club stood in the shadow of the big clubs like Beşiktaş , Fenerbahçe or Galatasaray , which dominated the city championship. Nevertheless, the team was qualified for the Millî Lig 1959 , the first season of the national Turkish professional league. In the first year table runner-up in the red relay, she occupied places in the middle of the table in the following two years. 1962 followed together with Ankara Demirspor and Şeker Hilal, relegation to the second division.

It was not until 1965 that Vefaspor rose again. The promoted team played in the back of the table in the following seasons. After 1973 only the better goal difference against the competitor Etimesgut Şekerspor had helped to keep the league, the club rose in the subsequent season as bottom of the table. First, the club played for direct resurgence, before he had to fight relegation over time in the second division.

In August 1980, the Simtel company , which had many Vefagymnasium graduates on its board, bought Vefa SK and renamed the association Vefa Simtel SK, or Vefa Simtel for short .

In 1987, the team finally relegated to the third division before slipping into the amateur area in 1994. After a short, two-seasons interlude in the third division between 1998 and 2000, the club consolidated in the top amateur league.
