Garbis İstanbulluoğlu ( Armenian Garbis İstanbulyan ; born February 24, 1927 in Istanbul , † February 17, 1994 in Istanbul) was a Turkish national football player and coach of Armenian descent.

Early life

Garbis İstanbulluoğlu was born in 1927 in Kadırga in the Fatih district of Istanbul. His father was a plumber (Turkish Tenekeci) and Garbis was called "Tenekeci Garbis" by his fans and the press.

Career

Garbis İstanbulluoğlu started playing soccer at his local sports club, Kadırga SK . In 1950 he joined the team Vefa SK , where he played in 90 games and scored over 52 goals. In 1957 he separated from Vefa. He then played for Taksim SK for three seasons . İstanbulluoğlu played as a striker.

National team

İstanbulluoğlu was the first footballer of Armenian origin to represent the Republic of Turkey in international games. He was first set up on June 1, 1952 in Ankara in the team of Turkey against Switzerland and scored his debut goal in this game, lost 5-1. He played four more times for Turkey and scored three goals. On May 25, 1953, he scored both goals for Turkey in a 2-1 win against Switzerland. He played for Turkey against Italy (B) on December 11, 1953 in Istanbul. However, this game was not recognized as an official game by FIFA .

Trainer

İstanbulluoğlu started his managerial career at Taksim SK . In the 1967/68 season he was the assistant manager of Mehmet Ali Has when Taksim SK played in the Turkish second division . The following year he was appointed technical director (manager) of Taksim SK - until 1974, when the club was relegated from the third division to the amateur division. He then became the manager of Şişli SK . Both teams represented the Armenian community in Istanbul . He was also a coach at Vefa SK .

death

Garbis İstanbulluoğlu died in Istanbul on February 17, 1994 and was buried in the Beyoğlu Üç Horan Kilisesi Church at the Şişli Armenian Cemetery after his funeral ceremony .
