The TFF 2. Lig (read: TFF İkinc Lig ) has been the third highest division in Turkish football since summer 2010 . The league was introduced in 1967 under the name Türkiye 3. Futbol Ligi , or 3. Lig for short , and kept this name until the summer of 2001. Between 2001 and 2006 the league was called Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi Bategorisi , or 2. Lig Bategorisi for short . In 2006, the name was on TFF Lig B changed. In 2010 it was renamed TFF 2nd Lig after the name of the highest Turkish division was changed from Türkiye 1. Futbol Ligi , or 1st Lig , to its current form, in Süper Lig , and the second division is now TFF 1st Lig called.
Game mode
Mode to found the league and the 2nd season (1967–1968)
The game mode of the TFF 1st Lig changed several times. The league was introduced in the summer of 1967 under the name Türkiye 3. Futbol Ligi as a single-track league with 17 teams, with all teams playing against each other twice in home and away games. The champions of the league rose directly to the highest Turkish division, which was then known as Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi , while the first season was played without relegation.
Two-lane league with and without relegated (1968–1970)
As early as the 1968/69 season , the second season of the third league, the league system was fundamentally reformed. Instead of being in a single-track league as before, the league was divided into a two-track league in which the two leaders, the two champions, were promoted directly to the 2nd league. With this division of the league into two tracks, the number of teams was increased from 17 to 28 teams, 14 clubs per group. The two tracks or groups were called group red and group white as before in the 2nd league . In contrast to the first season, the second season was designed with relegation, with the two bottom of the table relegated to the regional amateur league. In the second season as a two-lane league, in the Türkiye 3rd Futbol Ligi 1969/70 , the number of teams was increased from 28 to a total of 42 teams. These 42 teams were divided into two groups of 21, red and white . Also, in contrast to the previous season, the league was played this time without relegation.
Four-lane league with and without relegated (1970–1973)
In the 1970/71 season , the 3rd Lig was not played in two groups, in contrast to the previous season, but was transferred to a four-track league with 15 teams each. A total of 60 teams in four groups played for promotion to the 2nd league . The top of the table of all four groups rose directly to the higher 2. Lig , while there was again no relegation from the league. This mode was essentially retained in the 1971/72 season and only supplemented with relegation. The last two of all four groups rose to the subordinate regional amateur league. Contrary to the two relegated teams per group, no teams from the amateur leagues rose in the 1972/73 season . This reduced the number of teams per group from 15 to 13 and the league from a total of 60 to 52. Despite this reduction in the number of teams, two last-placed teams were relegated in the 1972/73 season.
Two-lane league (1973-1976)
As early as the summer of 1973, the game mode was changed again. The league was henceforth two-pronged, with both table top and both table runner up directly in the 2nd Lig . The teams in the last four places in the table in both groups were relegated to the regional amateur league. The total number of teams was reduced from 52 to 43, while the groups continued to be called the Red Group and the White Group . The team reduction came about because there were no promoters from the regional amateur league. The two-lane layout of the league in which there were two promoted teams remained in place until the summer of 1978. Only the number of teams varied over the seasons and thus also the number of relegated teams to the 3rd league. With the 1974/75 season , the league was changed slightly again. There were again no promoters from the regional amateur league, so the number of teams reduced from 43 to 35. With this season, only the top of the table in both groups rose and no longer the second placed. The relegated groups were reduced from four per group to two or one relegated from eight to a total of three. In the following season, the 1975/76 season , the game mode was largely retained. Only the total number of teams was reduced from 35 to 32 due to the elimination of promoters from the regional amateur league. In addition, the season was played without relegation.
Three-lane league with three promoted players (1976-1977)
With the 1976/77 season , the league was not played in two groups, in contrast to the previous season, but was expanded into a three-track league with twice eleven teams (group red and white) and once ten teams (group blue). A total of 32 teams in three groups played for promotion to the 2nd league or relegation to the regional amateur league. The top of the table of all three groups rose directly to the higher 2. Lig and the bottom of the table of the group red and white and the bottom of the table of the group blue and amateur league.
Two-lane league (1977-1980)
As early as the next summer, the summer of 1977, the game mode was changed again. The league was put back on a double track, with both top of the table rose directly to the 2nd Lig . The teams in the last three places in the table in both groups were relegated to the regional amateur league.
With the 1978/79 season , the game mode of the league was changed only to the extent that not only the first two were promoted, but also the two second placed.
Due to the lack of promoters from the regional amateur league, the number of teams was reduced from 25 to 18 in the 1979/80 season. These 18 teams were originally supposed to play in two groups for promotion and relegation. The champions and runners-up of both groups should be promoted to the second division and the bottom of the table in group A and the last two in group B should be relegated to the regional amateur league. Since the Turkish Football Association decided by a spontaneous decision in the summer of 1980 to dissolve the 3rd league and merge it with the 2nd league, the promoted and relegated players from the original game mode were discarded and all teams in the 3rd league, regardless of their placement, in the 2nd league . Lig added.
No league operation (1980–1984)
Before the 1980/81 season , the third division, the 3rd league, was abolished in Turkish professional football and the teams in the 3rd league were transferred to the one higher division, the 2nd league . This state lasted for four seasons.
Reintroduction of the 3rd Lig as a ten-lane league (1984–1990)
After Turkish professional football consisted of only two leagues, the 1st and 2nd leagues in the 1980/81 to 1983/84 seasons , it was expanded to three leagues again in the summer of 1984 and the 3rd league was reintroduced. The newly created 3rd Lig was designed as a ten-lane league. The ten groups were designated as Group 1 through Group 10 and consisted of 8 to 16 teams. The top of the table of all groups rose to the 2nd Lig, while the first season after the resumption, the 1984/85 season , was played without relegation.
In the 1985/86 season , the game mode was retained and only the number of teams increased from 132 to 142. This increase also meant that the number of teams per group was adjusted and the groups now consisted of 10 to 13 teams.
With the 1986/87 season , the number of teams increased from 142 to 166. In addition, the league was now also played with relegation, so that the two bottom of the table of all groups had to relegate to the amateur league. In the newcomers, in addition to the ten masters, the lack of a regulation from Group 1 also meant that Ünyespor , who placed second , was promoted. This club ended the season on points and goal difference equal to Trabzonspor (2P). Nevertheless, he declared Trabzonspor Football Association (2P) as a champion and thus a climber. Since no clear regulations for this case were announced at the start of the season, Ünyespor sued and also brought about promotion to the 2nd league by court decision.
For the 1987/88 season , the game mode was retained and only the number of teams increased from 166 to 152. In the 1988/89 season the number of teams was reduced to 147 and the total number of relegated teams from 20 teams to 19.
With the 1989/90 season , the league again experienced a reduction in the number of teams from 147 to 136. The season was played without relegation. The teams Trabzonspor (2P) , Karşıyaka SK (2P) , Tekirdağ Büyük Salatspor , Galatasaray (2P) withdrew voluntarily from the league and were not regular relegated teams.
Nine-lane league (1990-1992)
The total number of teams was increased from 136 to 161 in the 1990/91 season . The league was converted from a ten-lane to a nine-lane. Eight of the nine groups consisted of 18 teams and one of 17 teams. The group designation with consecutive numbering was retained. After the last season was designed without relegation, this season was carried out again with relegation. All top of the table rose, while all bottom of the table were relegated.
In the 1991/92 group , the game mode was retained and only the total number of teams increased from 161 to 166. As a result, the groups now consisted of 18 to 20 teams each.
Ten-Track League (1992-1993)
With the 1992/93 season , the game mode was changed so that the league was again a ten-lane league. The group designation with consecutive numbering was retained. Instead of the previous season, not only the bottom of the table were relegated, but the bottom four of all groups. The total number of teams was also reduced from 166 to 160, so that the nine groups now consisted of 16 clubs each.
Ten-lane league with play-offs (1993–1994)
The basic principle of the game mode of the last season was retained in the 1993/94 season . Again the league consisted of ten groups in which all group leaders rose directly. In order to increase the attractiveness and tension of the league, the Turkish Football Association changed the game mode slightly. In addition to the ten first placed, one of the ten second placed rose. This last climber was determined by the play-offs , which were played in a knockout system following the regular season. The total number was reduced from 160 to 130, so that all groups consisted of 13 teams each. The last two in all groups were relegated to the amateur league.
Ten-lane league (1994-1996)
After just one season with a play-off round, the league was organized without a play-off round in the 1994/95 season . Due to the increased number of teams from 130 to 14, the league consisted of ten groups with 14 teams each. All first placed rose and the last two placed in all groups relegated to the amateur league.
In the 1995/96 season , the game mode was retained and only the total number of teams was reduced from 140 to 139. As a result, one of the ten groups consisted of 13 instead of 14 teams.
Eight-lane league (1996-2000)
With the 1996/97 season , the previously ten-lane league was changed to an eight-lane with 17 to 18 teams. The total number of teams increased from 139 to 140. All first placed rose and the last two placed in all groups relegated to the amateur league.
In the 1997/98 season , the game mode remained unchanged. The eight groups consisted of 16 and 17 teams each because of the reduced total number of teams from 140 to 135. In seven groups, the last two were relegated and in one group only the bottom of the table.
The total number of teams increased from 135 to 137 with the 1998/99 game . The ten groups consisted of 17 and 18 teams each. In contrast to the previous season, the last two in all eight groups were relegated.
The game mode remained unchanged in the 1999/2000 season . The total number of teams decreased by three teams to 134.
Eight-lane league and league reform (2000-2001)
In principle, the game mode was retained in the 2000/01 season . However, since the Turkish Football Association wanted to reshape Turkish professional football in the summer of 2001 and, in the course of this, wanted to expand the league system that had previously contained three leagues into four leagues, preparations were made in the 2000/01 season in preparation for this. So the league was played without promotion to the 2nd Lig. Those teams in the first three places in the table of all eight groups secured themselves only the remaining in the 3rd division, which was renamed from the 3rd Lig in the 2nd Lig B CATEGORY in summer 2001. The teams in the last four places in the table should relegate to the amateur league. The teams in the last four places in the table should relegate to the TFF 3rd Lig , the fourth and lowest division of Turkish professional football, which was newly introduced in summer 2001 .
Five-lane league with subsequent promotion, relegation and play-off rounds (2001-2002)
After the reform of the Turkish football business, the 3rd Turkish league was now called 2nd Lig Bategorisi. With the league reform, the league's game mode was also changed. The league was played in three stages. In the first stage, five groups with ten teams each played a qualifying round with home and away legs. After the end of the 1st stage, the first two teams from all groups were included in a common group, the promotion round and played here for promotion to the 2nd Lig Aategorisi , in the then 2nd Turkish league. The remaining teams in the five groups of the qualifying round played in an unchanged group constellation now in a relegation round for relegation to the TFF 3rd Lig , the newly introduced 4th Turkish league. Both the promotion round and the relegation round represented the 2nd stage and were played with two legs. The teams in the first two places of the promotion round rose directly to the 2nd Lig Aategorisi and the last two teams of all groups in the relegation round relegated to the TFF 3rd Lig. While the points from the qualifying round were not taken into the promotion round, they were counted unchanged in the relegation round. The first two of the promotion round rose directly to the 2nd Lig Aategorisi. The third promoted team was determined in the third stage in the form of a play-off round. The teams ranked from three to five and all the promotion round group winners the descent groups should in the knockout system play out the remaining climbers. The total number of teams was reduced from 134 to 50 teams.
Three-lane league (2002-2005)
After just one year, the game mode was changed again and transferred from a five-lane and three-tier league to a three-lane and one-tier league. In three groups, called groups A, B and C, 18 (group A) and 17 (group B and C) teams played for promotion and relegation. The champions of the three groups rose to the 2nd Lig Aategorisi and the teams on the last two places in the table of all groups in the TFF 3rd Lig . The total number of teams rose from 50 to 52 teams.
In the 2003/04 season , the game mode was kept unchanged and only the total number of teams was reduced by one team to 51 teams.
Five-lane league with subsequent promotion, relegation and play-off rounds (2005-2009)
After three seasons, the national football association set the game mode back to the game mode of the 2001/02 season.
The league was played in three stages. In the first stage, a qualifying round was played in five groups of ten or eleven teams with home and away games.
In the 2006/07 season , the game mode was retained unchanged. Only the league name was changed from Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi Bategorisi to now TFF Lig B. The total number of teams has been reduced from 51 to 50. Thus all groups passed the qualifying round reduced to ten teams.
The total team numbers were increased in the 2008/09 season , but the game mode remained unchanged.
Four-lane league with subsequent promotion, relegation and play-off rounds (2009-2010)
The game mode was only marginally changed in the 2009/10 season . Instead of the previous five groups, the previous game mode was continued with four groups. The total number of teams was reduced by five teams to 45 teams in the previous season.
Two-lane league with an additional play-off (2010- ...)
With the 2010/11 season , the league name was changed from TFF Lig B to TFF 2nd Lig. In addition, the game mode has been reformed. The four-lane and three-tier league was converted into a two-lane and two-tier league. The groups were called white and red groups and consisted of 18 teams each. The champions of the two groups rose to the TFF 1st Lig and the teams on the last three places in the table of all groups in the TFF 3rd Lig . The total number of teams fell from 45 to 36 teams. After the league phase, the play-offs were carried out in the second stage. The last climber should be played out in the knockout system . For the play-offs, the teams qualified on positions two to five in both groups.
The game mode was retained in the 2011/12 season and only the total number of teams was reduced from 36 to 34. In the TFF 2. Lig 2011/12 , the total number of teams was retained compared to the previous season and only the number of relegated teams was reduced from six to four. From then on, the teams that occupied the last two places in the table were relegated.
While everything remained unchanged in the 2012/13 season, the total number of teams was increased to 36 in the 2013/14 season . This increased the number of relegated teams from four to six teams. From then on, the teams that occupied the last three places in the table were relegated.
In the 2014/15 season , the number of relegations was increased from six to eight, so that now the teams relegated to the last four places in the table in both groups. Foreign players are not allowed to play in the TFF 2. Lig. Teams that have been relegated from the TFF 1st Lig can loan their foreign players to clubs in the upper leagues.
