Tofaş Spor Kulübü ( German Tofaş Sportklub ) is a Turkish basketball club from Bursa . The club was twice champion and three times cup winners of Turkey. Until 1999 the association was also known under the name Tofaş SAS .
history
The association was founded in 1974. The Turkish automobile manufacturer Tofaş sponsored the association from the beginning .
Since it was founded, they played in lower-class leagues before they were promoted to the first-class Türkiye Basketbol Ligi in 1976 . There they established themselves, became runner-up in 1978 and then reached the play-offs several times. In 1987 they took part in the Korać Cup and the following year in the European Cup Winners' Cup, although no basketball cup was played in Turkey between 1973 and 1992. You always failed early.
In 1989 the unexpected relegation followed, but Tofaş managed direct resurgence and was runner-up in 1991 for the second time. In the following years they established themselves again in the first division, but without reaching the final again. However, the club won the Turkish Basketball Cup in 1993, the first title in the club's history. Europeans were also represented permanently during this period. The greatest success was recorded in 1997, with reaching the final of the Korać Cup, where Tofaş had to admit defeat to Aris Thessaloniki .
In 1999 Tolga Öngören , who later also coached EnBW Ludwigsburg and the Walter Tigers Tübingen , became the club's coach. He led the club to the first championship and won the trophy that same year. The following year the team played in the EuroLeague , dropped out in the first group stage, but defended the national double .
At the height of the sporting development, Tofaş SAS withdrew from professional basketball because of serious financial problems and was relegated voluntarily.
In 2004, after four years of abstinence, they rose again to the top division, but could no longer build on the successes of the past. Further descents and ascents followed. Since 2009 they have been playing consistently in the first division, where midfield positions have been achieved.
