history
The men's basketball team was established in the club in 1951. Soon you could catch up with the top of the teams within the Turkish metropolis of Istanbul and reached the championship within the İstanbul Erkekler Basketbol Ligi, which existed until 1966, in 1960, on which three further third places followed in the following years. Instead, they won the national championship after the runner-up in 1960, winning the title in 1961 and 1962. But already when the joint top national division Türkiye Basketbol Ligi (TBL) was set up, the team from Darüşşafaka SK was no longer among the national leaders and initially no longer played first class .
It was not until 1992 that they returned to the top division, which they then belonged to for 18 seasons until 2010. At first, at the end of the season, they were mostly among the teams placed in the lower half of the table. If you were qualified for the play-offs for the championship, you were usually eliminated in the first round. This changed at the end of the millennium when, with the help of the American Michael Ansley , they could safely qualify for the play-offs among the top eight teams, and in the 2000/01 season they made it into the play for the first time as third in the main round -off semifinal series, which succeeded again in the following season. In addition, they made it into the cup final, which was lost to champions and defending champion Efes Pilsen Istanbul 74:78. Among the most important players of this time were the brothers and national players Mehmet and Ömer Kahyaoğlu , whose father Ali was active in the club management.
After having missed the play-offs twice in a row, at the end of the 2006/07 season they managed to qualify for the final round of the championship again in eighth place. In the first round they lost against the eventual champions and local rivals Fenerbahçe Ülker , who could, however, inflict their only defeat in the play-offs at the time. After a season in which they had only just managed to stay in league position third from the bottom of the table, they were again in the final round under the new name sponsor Cooper Tires with the " rookie " import players Cliff Hammonds and Maarten Leunen as the main round eight of the 2008/09 season, in which they were eliminated again against the eventual champions and local rivals Efes Pilsen SK. What followed was a disastrous 2009/10 season, in which they were relegated to the bottom of the table after 18 years in the top division after only six wins in 30 games.
Since 1995, the team played in the then completed sports hall in the Sarıyer district , which was named after Ayhan Şahenk , the founder of the Doğuş holding. His son Ferit Şahenk finally strengthened the involvement in the sports club and made possible the second division championship in 2014 and the return to the top division by signing well-known, experienced players such as Lawrence Roberts and Lynn Greer . After the promotion, coach Orhun Ene was replaced by the renowned and internationally experienced Oktay Mahmuti and the squad was rejuvenated and strengthened with top international talent . After the third main round place, the ambitious first division returner lost surprisingly in the first play-off round against Trabzonspor Medical Park . After the Doğuş Group joined the ULEB Euroleague as the main sponsor , the team still received a wildcard for participation in the highest-ranking European club competition of the 2015/16 season .
