Marcus Anthony Slaughter (born March 18, 1985 in San Leandro , California ) is an American basketball player . After studying in his native US state , Slaughter played as a professional in Europe , particularly in France , Germany , Spain and Turkey . In Germany, Slaughter won the double with the Brose Baskets in 2012 and in Spain with Real Madrid in 2015 even a triple crown as well as another championship and another cup victory.

career

While studying at San Diego State University , Slaughter worked for the Aztecs college team in NCAA Division I. The athletic and jumping forward only played three years for the Aztecs, but is one of the ten best rebounders of all time for this team. When he won the Championship of the Mountain West Conference in 2006, he was voted Most Valuable Player of the final tournament. In the following national final you lost in the first round against the Hoosiers of Indiana University . After the Conference Championship, Slaughter waived another college season and signed up directly for the NBA Draft , where he was not selected by any professional NBA club . In the summer of 2006 he also took part in the NBA Summer League wearing the Los Angeles Lakers jersey , but this did not result in a season contract with the NBA.

Then Slaughter moved to Europe as a professional and played in Izmir for Pınar Karşıyaka in the TBL . There the professional newcomer was able to draw attention to himself with good statistics in the form of a double-double on average for points and rebounds. In July 2007 he signed a long-term contract with the NBA club Miami Heat , which was however dissolved a day before the start of the season. Slaughter then went to Israel and played for Hapoel from Jerusalem in the Ligat ha'Al . At Hapoel he was dismissed in December 2007, so that in January 2008 he signed a contract with BCM Gravelines in Dunkirk , France , where he helped to secure relegation in the LNB Pro A.

For the 2008/09 season he moved to the German basketball league for the Eisbären Bremerhaven. The former participant in the play-offs for the German championship stumbled in that season and found himself almost always at the bottom of the table. In addition to his athletically spectacular style of play, Slaughter himself made headlines above all because the club separated from the player in November 2008 due to allegedly unprofessional behavior. The rumors about the alleged reason for the premature separation attracted international attention. Slaughter returned to the French Pro A and played in Le Havre for Saint Thomas Basket , who were also able to secure relegation with his help. With less than ten rebounds per game, he was the best rebounder of the LNB Pro A in that season. For the following season signed a contract with the French champions of 2008 SLUC Basket from Nancy . In the 2010 play-offs, however, they were eliminated in the first round.

2010 Slaughter moved to the Spanish league ACB to Blancos de Rueda from Valladolid , with whom he narrowly missed the play-offs for the Spanish championship. He was in the 2010/11 season the player with the most dunkings per game in the statistics maintained by the ACB league. For the 2011/12 season he returned to the German BBL to defending champion Brose Baskets, where he was supposed to compensate for the departure of the MVP from the previous final series Kyle Hines , who moved to Olympiacos . After winning another double with the Bamberg team, he moved back to Spain, where he reinforced runner-up Real Madrid in the 2012/13 season. With the Spanish record champions, he started the 2012/13 season by winning the Spanish Supercup , he also reached the final of the EuroLeague 2012/13 with Real Madrid and ended the season with a narrow title win in five games in the final series over defending champions FC Barcelona . In the following season, Real secured the Copa del Rey de Baloncesto , but surprisingly lost the final of the 2013/14 EuroLeague again after extra time against Maccabi Tel Aviv , before finally losing the Spanish championship title again to FC Barcelona, which they played in EuroLeague semi-finals still outclassed. In the 2014/15 season Slaughter finally achieved total success with the Madrilenians, when they won both the Spanish Cup competition, the EuroLeague 2014/15 and the Spanish Championship, which is also known as the Triple Crown .

For the 2015/16 season, Slaughter moved to Turkey, where he had started his professional career, and played in Istanbul for Darüşşafaka SK Doğuş, who had returned to the top Turkish league a year earlier after increased sponsorship allocations and a wildcard for the EuroLeague that season 2015/16 received. Here you could immediately qualify for the second group stage of the 16 best teams, but in which you only reached sixth place behind local rivals Fenerbahçe and Anadolu Efes and did not qualify for the play-offs of this competition. As fourth in the main round of the Turkish championship, they remained without a win in the play-off semi-final series against the main round first Anadolu Efes and needed another wildcard to participate in the EuroLeague 2016/17 .
