Maarten Arthur "Maarty" Leunen (born September 3, 1985 in Vancouver , Washington ) is an American basketball player . After studying in his home country, Leunen was selected by the Houston Rockets in the 2008 NBA Draft , but did not complete a game in the NBA, the most highly endowed professional league . Instead, he began a professional career in Europe, where he played five years for the Italian first division club Pallacanestro Cantù after a season in Turkey . In the 2014/15 basketball Bundesliga , Leunen played for the German first division club ratiopharm Ulm.

Career

Leunen was the end of his schooling in Redmond (Oregon) as Gatorade Player of the Year of the state Oregon excellent and got a place at the University of Oregon , where he worked for the college team Ducks long from 2004 to four years in the former Pacific-10 Conference (Pac-10) of the NCAA and was in the same year as his teammates Malik Hairston and Bryce Taylor of the Ducks. In 2007 they won the championship tournament of the Pac-10 and reached the quarter-finals Elite Eight in the national NCAA finals tournament , which was lost to defending champion Florida Gators . In the summer of 2007, Leunen was among others with Roy Hibbert in the squad of the national team at the Pan American Games 2007 , in which they only finished fifth. A year later, the Ducks lost in the first round of the NCAA finals against the Bulldogs of Mississippi State University . Leunen ended his four-year college career with 1,259 points and 903 rebounds as the Ducks' team's second best rebounder of all time. While Hairston was selected in the 2008 NBA draft in 48th position, the Houston Rockets secured the rights to Leunen in 54th position, while Bryce Taylor was not considered in the entry draft of any club. Hairston was only granted a brief career in the NBA with the San Antonio Spurs before moving to Italy and later playing in Turkey. Taylor signed his first professional contract in Italy, while Leunen signed without use in the NBA for the 2008/09 season with Darüşşafaka SK from Istanbul in the Türkiye Basketbol Ligi .

With Darüşşafaka SK Leunen reached at the end of the season in eighth place in the table in the play-offs for the 2009 championship, in which they were eliminated without a win against local rivals and record champions Efes Pilsen SK . For the 2009/10 season Leunen went to the Italian Lega Basket Serie A and signed a contract with the traditional club from Cantù in Lombardy . After the multiple European Cup winners of the 1970s and 1980s had missed the play-offs for the championship in the previous year, they reached the final round for the title in fourth under the new coach Andrea Trinchieri in 2010, in which they were in the semi-final series against series champion Montepaschi Siena in three games remained without a chance. A season later Cantù lost the final game in the cup competition "Coppa Italia" against double winners Siena and also in the final series for the championship they lost to the defending champion, with the team at least one win in five games. After Cantù failed early in the Eurocup 2010/11 , as runner-up in the highest-ranking European club competition ULEB Euroleague 2011/12 they reached at least the intermediate round of the 16 best teams, in which they only failed because of the poorer direct comparison with Maccabi Tel Aviv . After Cantù had lost the cup final against Siena again, they surprisingly lost the following three games against Scavolini Pesaro in third place in the first play-off round after two opening wins and were eliminated. Only because of the good last year's good performances in the Euroleague one was admitted to the qualifying round of the ULEB Euroleague 2012/13 , which, however, was won as an organizer just like the Supercoppa at the beginning of the season and participated again in the Euroleague, in which, however, after only three preliminary round victories in ten games this time eliminated after the preliminary round. As the main round seventh in Serie A 2013 you could still hold down the second Banco di Sardegna Sassari in seven games in the first play-off round , but in the semi-final series you were also eliminated in seven games against Acea Rome . In the Eurocup 2013/14 Cantù failed very narrowly and under dramatic circumstances with a point difference in the last group game of the intermediate round in a direct comparison against the German representative ratiopharm Ulm and was eliminated. In the play-offs of Serie A, the runners-up from Rome waited for the third of the regular season in the first round, who this time were defeated in three games without their own victory.

For the 2014/15 basketball Bundesliga , Leunen moved to the German first division club ratiopharm from Ulm in the basketball league , in which Bryce Taylor had been playing for a long time. Taylor had become German champions for the first time in 2014 with FC Bayern Munich , but failed in the ULEB Euroleague 2013/14 in particular due to two defeats against Galatasaray Istanbul with Malik Hairston in the squad to advance to the quarter-final play-offs. For the 2015/2016 season, however, Leunen did not receive a new contract in Ulm and moved to Felice Scandone Avellino in Italy.
