Andrea Trinchieri (born August 6, 1968 in Milan ) is an Italian basketball coach . He has been the coach of FC Bayern Munich since 2020 . From 2014 to 2018 he was the head coach of the German first division club Brose Bamberg .

Career

Andrea Trinchieri began his coaching career in 1998 as an assistant coach in his hometown of Milan at Olimpia Milano , after having worked his way up from the sixth Italian division. Trinchieri was particularly interesting for the Italian record champions because of his language skills. As the son of a mother born in the former Yugoslavia , in today's Croatia , and an Italian diplomat son born in the USA , Trinchieri grew up trilingual and speaks Croatian, Serbian, English and Italian fluently.

After six years in Milan, Trinchieri became head coach at the Italian club Gruppo Triboldi Basket in 2004 and made it to the second Italian league LegADue with him in 2006 .

After his short time at Juvecaserta Basket , who also played in LegADue, Trinchieri moved to league competitor Veroli Basket. He won the Italian second division cup with Veroli and was named coach of the year in LegADue in 2009.

For the 2009/10 season Trinchieri signed with the Italian first division club Pallacanestro Cantù . As the head coach of the club from Serie A , he was elected Coach of the Year in both 2010 and 2011 and won the Italian Supercup in the 2012/13 season. Cantù also played in the Eurocup 2010/11, but was eliminated in the first group stage.

Following his engagement in Cantù, Trinchieri was the head coach of the Russian first division club and Eurocup participant UNICS Kazan for a year . In the VTB United League , Kazan made it to the semi-finals, in which they were eliminated against CSKA Moscow after three narrow defeats. In the Russian Cup, however, the title was won for the third time in the club's history in the final against Lokomotive Kuban Krasnodar . In the Eurocup 2013/14 they also made it to the finals, where they met Valencia Basket Club . UNICS had to admit defeat in two games and became runner-up. In addition, Trinchieri has now been named Trainer of the Year in the Eurocup.

Parallel to his work in Kazan, he was in charge of the Greek national team in 2013/14 , but was replaced by Fotis Katsikaris in 2014 despite an existing contract for the coming season .

For the 2014/15 season , Trinchieri signed a three-year contract with an option to leave after two seasons with the German first division club Brose Baskets from Bamberg, in order to completely recompose the team after missing the championship for the first time in five years. They made it to the final in the BBL-Pokal 2015 , where they met host EWE Baskets Oldenburg and just lost 70:72. As the first in the table in the main round Bamberg moved into the playoffs and prevailed without defeat until the final. Against last year's champions FC Bayern Munich , Trinchieri and Brose Baskets brought the championship title back to Bamberg after five games . In the Eurocup 2014/15 they lost twice in the round of 16 against the locomotive Kuban Krasnodar, who had previously been undefeated in this competition, and were eliminated.

In the following season 2015/16 Trinchieri announced his early contract extension for another year, so that he now had an exit option for the 2017/18 season. Bamberg again moved into the playoffs as first in the main round and managed the sweep through the entire playoffs and the renewed championship against the final opponent ratiopharm ulm . In the 2016 BBL Cup , they were eliminated in the semifinals against hosts Munich. As last year's champions, Brose Baskets qualified for the EuroLeague 2015/16 and reached the intermediate round of the 16 best teams. After Bamberg had reached this competition round for the third time in its history, the first success at this level finally succeeded after 21 previously unsuccessful games with the home win over Žalgiris Kaunas . This was very clear with 96:63 in the final result, but they missed participation in the playoffs just about a victory, which until then no German team had achieved.

In the 2016/17 season , his third season in Bamberg, Trinchieri first led the team to victory in the Cup in Berlin and then back into the playoffs as second in the main round behind ratiopharm ulm. With the exception of the opening defeat in the quarter-finals against Telekom Baskets Bonn, the team managed to sweep through the entire playoffs for the third German championship in a row and the fourth double in the club's history. Thanks to the previous year's championship, Bamberg qualified again for the EuroLeague 2016/17 , which was held in a new mode for the first time this season. After 30 home and away games against the 15 opponents in the main round, Bamberg ended the season in 13th and missed the playoffs. Bamberg get 10 victories. Of the 20 defeats, 12 were exceptionally narrowly lost with six or fewer points.

After three championships in a row, Trinchieri extended his contract in Bamberg again until 2019 with a release clause for the 2018/19 season. After the departure of numerous top performers, including Nicolò Melli , Darius Miller and Daniel Theis , the squad was put together by Trinchieri after the controversial departure of sports director Daniele Baiesi . It quickly became apparent that the new Bamberg team did not harmonize and the long-term injuries of four players resulted in numerous Bamberg defeats. After the club came under increasing pressure in the battle for the playoffs, Trinchieri was dismissed as head coach on February 19, 2018 after only three Bamberg wins in the previous 15 games. The Italian had been unable to train the team for several weeks last January due to shoulder surgery. He had returned to the sidelines shortly before his release.

From 2018 to 2020 he was a coach at the Serbian club KK Partizan Belgrade . He led Partizan to win the Serbian Cup competition in 2019 and 2020 and to win the Supercup of the Adriatic Basketball League in 2019. In mid-July 2020 he was introduced as the new coach at FC Bayern Munich .
