Darius Tiyon Miller (born March 21, 1990 in Maysville , Kentucky ) is an American basketball player . After Miller had won the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship with the Kentucky Wildcats at the end of his studies in 2012 , he was selected by the New Orleans Hornets , for which he played in the highest-endowed professional league NBA for the next two years . There, Miller was at the beginning of the 2014/15 season released from his contract and he moved to Germany , where he met with the Brose Baskets in the National Basketball League , the German Cup in 2015, 2016 and 2017 won.

Career

Miller won the 2008 Kentucky State Championship with the school team of Mason County High School from the county of the same name on the Ohio border and was honored as the best school player in the state as Kentucky Mr. Basketball . Miller stayed in his home region to study and studied nearby at the University of Kentucky in Lexington , where he was active for the renowned college team Wildcats in the NCAA . In his first season as a freshman , the Wildcats 2009 missed for the first time in 18 years participation in the national NCAA finals under coach Billy Gillespie, who was then replaced by John Calipari . In the summer of 2009 Miller was able to win the U19 World Cup in New Zealand in the US junior national team together with Gordon Hayward , Shelvin Mack , Klay Thompson , Trey Thompkins and Tyshawn Taylor, among others .

Kentucky coach Calipari was more determined in his "recruits" than Gillespie before, whereby his methods were referred to and characterized as "one-and-done". With John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins , Calipari immediately managed the championship of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and the return to the NCAA finals, in which they eliminated in the quarterfinals Elite Eight . A year later they returned to the Final Four in 2011 , in which they lost in the semifinals to the later title holder UConn Huskies , in which the German freshman Niels Giffey was active. In 2012, the Wildcats lost the SEC championship final as defending champions, but won their first title in the NCAA finals since 1998 after beating the Kansas Jayhawks in the final . At the obligatory reception for the title winner in the White House , US President Barack Obama mentioned Darius Miller alongside Most Outstanding Player (MOP) Anthony Davis , who was the second player after Darrell Griffith to win a national NCAA finals after being named Kentucky Mr. Basketball after the state championship College student in Kentucky. The special mention of the local, four-year-old "Seniors" Miller could be interpreted as a subliminal commentary on Calipari's "one-and-done" policy.

Miller completed 152 games in Division I of the NCAA for the Wildcats, making him the player with the most appearances for the Wildcats and, besides Deon Thompson, the only player in this division to have reached such a number of games in a period of just four years. In the 2012 NBA Draft , Miller was selected after five teammates in 46th position by the New Orleans Hornets , who had already selected his teammate Anthony Davis in first position, and thus for the first time six players of the same college team in a draft with only two rounds. This is remarkable and underlines the dominance of the Wildcats in that draft, since in a basketball game of one team only five players are allowed on the field at the same time and for the first time in the first two positions with MOP Davis and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist two players of the same Crew had been selected.

With the Hornets, "Rookie" Miller came in the NBA 2012/13 on 52 missions with almost 13 minutes playing time per game and has meanwhile been assigned to the " farm team " Iowa Energy in the NBA Development League for a total of eleven missions . In the following season, Miller as a "sophomore" was able to increase his playing time and his average point yield to a good four points per game, but the team now operating as Pelicans once again missed the play-offs for the championship of the NBA. After only 45 appearances in his second season, the Pelicans finally released Miller from his contract with teammate Patric Young after five appearances at the beginning of the NBA 2014/15 at the end of November .

After league rival Los Angeles Clippers refrained from signing Millers in January 2015, Miller finally signed with former German champions Brose Baskets from Bamberg at the end of February 2015 . In the previous season, the team missed the championship title for the first time in five years and was reassembled by the new coach Andrea Trinchieri . After losing the final in the Beko BBL-Pokal in 2015 against hosts EWE Baskets Oldenburg , Brose Baskets moved into the playoffs of the basketball Bundesliga 2014/15 as first in the table . Bamberg made the sweep into the final round, where they met defending champions FC Bayern Munich . In five games against the previous year's champions from Upper Bavaria , Bamberg ultimately triumphed and took back the championship title. Miller also played with Bamberg in the second-highest club competition Eurocup 2014/15 , in which they fought their way to the second round. There you met the locomotive Kuban Krasnodar , who had previously been undefeated in 16 games and were led by Malcolm Delaney . A narrow defeat with 78:80 in the first leg was followed by a more pronounced one with 53:70 in the second leg against the Russians and Bamberg was eliminated.

In July 2015 Miller, who played an important role in the team with a lot of playing time from the start, extended his engagement in Bamberg for another season until 2016. Due to the previous year's championship, the Brose Baskets also qualified for the highest European competition EuroLeague 2015/16 , in which you reached the intermediate round of the 16 best teams. After Bamberg had reached this competition round for the third time in its history, the first success at this level was finally achieved after 21 previously unsuccessful games with the home win over Žalgiris Kaunas , which was very convincing with 96:63 in the end result. Ultimately, only one victory was missing for a German team to make it into the EuroLeague playoffs for the first time. In the BBL, after the semi -final defeat in the Beko BBL Cup in 2016 against hosts Munich, they again reached the playoffs as the main round first, in which Bamberg even managed the sweep through the entire playoffs for the second championship title in a row. After 26 points off the bench in eight of nine made three-point throws in the first final match and an average of 18 points in the series Darius Miller was chosen for its outstanding performance in the final round against ratiopharm Ulm for Finals MVP appointed. The week before, he had announced his contract extension for two more years until 2018.

In the 2016/17 season , Miller played again with Bamberg in the EuroLeague, which was played in a new mode for the first time this season. After 30 exhausting home and return matches against the 15 opponents in the main round of the EuroLeague 2016/17 , Bamberg finished the season 13th and thus missed the playoffs. Bamberg was victorious in 10 games. Of the 20 defeats, 12 were exceptionally narrowly lost with six or fewer points. In the Easycredit BBL-Pokal 2017 , Trinchieri also succeeded for the first time in winning the cup in the final against FC Bayern Munich with 74:71 and Bamberg moved into the playoffs as second in the main round of the BBL. With the exception of the opening defeat in the series against Telekom Baskets Bonn, the new sweep through the entire playoffs to the third German championship in a row and the fourth double in the club's history.

In July 2017 Brose Bamberg announced that Darius Miller is making use of his contractually anchored release clause and will rejoin the New Orleans Pelicans in the NBA for a transfer fee .
