Then the dominant player Tyler Hansbrough left the tar heels to become a professional in the NBA . After the Tar Heels in three years always at least the quarter-finals of the nationwide finals had reached previously, had 2010 without Hansbrough just an average success rate and only got an invitation to the National Invitation Tournament , in which the final against the Flyers of the University of Dayton lost . In contrast to Hansbrough and other teammates of the 2009 championship team, Thompson, who with 152 appearances in NCAA championship games is one of the ten players in the NCAA with the most appearances of all time, was not selected in the 2010 NBA draft .

Ikaros Esperos and KK Union Olimpija

After finishing his studies in 2010 Thompson moved to Europe and played in Greece for Ikaros Esperos in the Athens suburb of Kallithea . He quickly managed to gain a foothold there and was elected to the All-Star Team in his first season in Europe . His club Ikaros Esperos, however, missed the play-offs for the Greek championship and Thompson moved to Slovenia for the following season. With KK Union Olimpija from Ljubljana, Thompson also played in the highest-ranking European club competition ULEB Euroleague 2011/12 , in which the team was eliminated after just one win in ten games in the preliminary round. Although KK Union Olimpija was able to successfully defend its national cup title in 2012, with Thompson being elected MVP of the cup competition, the final series of the championship was again lost to defending champion and arch-rival KK Krka from Novo mesto . However, Thompson was again elected Allstar and was named MVP in the Allstar Game.
