history

Novo mesto

The city was founded on April 7, 1365 by Duke Rudolf IV of Habsburg in an area where there were no settlements before, and was named Rudolfswerth after him. From 1783 the city was officially called Neustadtl , but was renamed Rudolfswerth again in German official usage between 1861 and 1867 ; the Slovenian name remained Novo mesto .

coat of arms

The coat of arms of the municipality of Novo mesto represents its founder, Archduke Rudolf IV: seated, with black hair and beard, sitting on a golden throne with a high rectangular backrest. The throne stands on green ground, the background is a silver shield. The Archduke wears a white collar and white cuffs, a black belt with gold decorations; a fleece on the chest; the red headgear has a white jagged border and a cross on top; in the outstretched right hand a blue orb and in the left hand a gold flag; black shoes are visible under the edge of the floor-length tunic.

The monastery and the adjoining church were partially destroyed by a fire in the monastery in 1664. Then they were rebuilt in the baroque style. The oldest library of Noveo mesto is located in the monastery. Between the years 1746 and 1870 the monks ran the high school.
  • The Kandijski most bridge . It connects the center of Novo mesto with the Kandija district and runs from the lower part of the main square over the Krka River . The wooden bridge, built in 1898, stood a few tens of meters upstream. The new bridge is a riveted iron structure and crosses the Krka in a 75-meter-long arch. It is one of the rarest and oldest structures of this type in Slovenia and thus one of the Slovenian cultural monuments.
