The Cathedral of St. Nikolai (Slovenian: " Stolna cerkev sv. Nikolaja ") in the Slovenian town of Novo mesto is the Roman Catholic episcopal church of the Diocese of Novo mesto .

The stone church is located on a hill not far from the Krka River . With the establishment of the Diocese of Novo Mesto in 2006, the original collegiate church was elevated to a cathedral. The church shows Gothic and Baroque elements. A special feature is the broken longitudinal axis. The choir is significantly higher than the main nave.

In the place of today's church there was already an older church, which was mentioned for the first time in 1428. It was considerably enlarged and rebuilt from 1494 onwards. This renovation dragged on until 1623. The reasons for this were the attacks by the Turks and a fire in 1576. The high altar painting, a work by the Venetian artist Tintoretto , was also purchased at this time . The side altars, erected in 1733, are by Valentin Metzinger . The baroque style church was regotified during a further restoration. The bell tower was added in 1860.
