The oldest finds that were found in the city and the surrounding area date from the second millennium BC. The town has been historically written since the 12th century, when Stefan Nemanjić received this region as a gift from the Byzantine emperor. At that time the city was called Dubočica .

Leskovac is first mentioned by name as a large village in a document from the 14th century.

This name was not used during the Ottoman rule . The Turks called the city and mountain Hisar, which means castle or fortress.

In 1878 the entire Albanian population between Leskovac and Niš was forced to flee by Serbian troops into Kosovo or to those areas that are still inhabited by Albanians today .

In the middle of the 19th century, Leskovac was the second largest city in Serbia after Belgrade. With its 13 factories, the specialization was in the textile industry .

Along with Niš, Leskovac is one of the economic and cultural centers of southern Serbia. In addition to a large number of secondary schools, Leskovac also has two technical colleges (commercial and textile college) and a faculty that is part of the University of Niš.
