Graben Castle
The moat ( Slovenian degree trench ) is a medieval castle in Slovenia . It is located in Lower Carniola (formerly called Middle Carniola ) on the right bank of the Krka River between the villages of Ragov log and Krka an der Krk, just under two kilometers downstream from Novo mesto ( New Town ). Moat is the ancestral home of the noble free sex from digging stone .
history
The historian Johann Weichard von Valvasor assumes in his work Die Ehre des Hertzogthums Crain : that is, true, thorough, and quite specific evidence and condition of this Roman-Keyserlichen magnificent hereditary land , the reason for the designation "ditch" is the deep ditch from the Krainer line of the Von Graben family, on the edge of which - at that time, a tower had been built. This tower was reached via a wooden path and through a gate that was well above the ground. Valvasor names Conrad and Grimoald vom Graben as the first residents known by name , who are said to have lived around 1170. Graben was originally owned by the Krainer line , but is first mentioned in 1330 as the possession of Ulrich II von Graben from the Kornberg line (in Styria). Valvasor also counts Virgil von Graben (from the Sommeregger line in Carinthia and East Tyrol / Lienz; son of the Kornberg-born father Andreas von Graben zu Sommeregg ) in 1499 , and in 1520 the brothers Andree , Wilhelm and Wolfgang von Graben , through whom Graben again came into the possession of the Kornberg line . Valvasor can neither name persons nor data about the further course of ownership.
Since 1510 [contradicting the records of Valvasor] the castle and lordship of Graben belonged to Georg von Mordaxt. The Lords of Mordaxt expanded the tower on three sides and reinforced it with a curtain wall . The plant remained in the possession of this family until the beginning of the 18th century, when the Counts of Gallenberg bought it. In 1751 it went to the Barone Zois von Edelstein, whose heirs sold it to Anton Smola and his wife Klara in 1810. The last owner was the Jalen family from Kranjska Gora . The converted one-storey building with its pyramid roof and a pillar- supported balcony is now home to apartments belonging to the Krka agricultural cooperative.
Cultural monument
With the ordinance on natural sights and immovable historical and cultural monuments in the municipality of Novo mesto, Official Gazette of the Republic of Slovenia, No. 38/1992, Graben Castle was declared a cultural monument of local importance.
