Franz Andreas Schega
Franz Andreas Schega (* 16th November 1711 in Novo mesto dt Neustadtl at Laibach. Krain (today Slovenia ); † 6. December 1787 in Munich ) was a medalist and die cutter of the rococo .
Life
Franz Andreas Schega worked in Munich from 1738 and produced numerous coins for Bavaria and the Palatinate ( signature mostly FAS). He was the second son of the gunsmith Andreas Schege and Katharina, née Castelzin, and brother of the seal cutter Johann Bartolomäus Schege. In 1751 he was appointed First Bavarian Court Medalist and created a number of artistically valuable medals (signature mostly FA SCHEGA F.). Hedlinger called him "the first die cutter in Europe".
Schega can be described as a portraitist of the spiritual Bavaria . In addition to his portrait medals, the artist created independent sculptural works of art, which various groups of the intellectual elite of Bavaria during the reign of Max III. In 1750 he immortalized the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order , Clemens August I of Bavaria , on a medal. In the same year he paid homage to his artist colleague George Desmarées with a portrait medal as thanks for his portrait painted by Desmarées, oil, 87 × 67 cm, Munich, Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen . Both medals are considered works of art that are exemplary in their genre and time.
