On the concept of the new town
In many cities, Neustadt is the name of a district. It is mostly a historical extension of the city law from the core city to a suburb . A new city wall was often drawn around this district. In addition to purely organizational reasons for urban development , many new towns are located on the other bank of a river. The reason for these parts of the city lies in the construction of a stone bridge, which in the event of a siege could no longer simply be burned down and therefore the bridgehead on the other side required special protection.
A slightly different toponym is the basis of the cities and districts that emerged as a new urban planning , such as Wiener Neustadt ( Nova Civitas ), a border fortress from the High Middle Ages, the New Town of Prague (Nové Město), a city founded by Charles IV in 1346, or the Salzburg community Neustadt on the other bank of the Salzach ( moor settlement , baroque period).
Modern urban planning concepts are the planned city and the satellite city , which are referred to in English as New Town , New City ( system of central places ).
Name variants
Also Neudorf , Neusiedl , New churches etc. is a similar place names based. Neumarkt mostly refers to the main market of a new district or a new settlement, but also to newly granted market rights . This applies to most Central European place names on new , which do not refer to new discovery .
A different etymology in this sense, however, has Neustadt , a small scattered settlement near Gutau in Upper Austria's Mühlviertel - still in the 19th century Neustadl as the farm name "new Stadl ( stable , barn )", there are no references to municipal law here in rural areas. Similarly, in such cases, it is also possible to derive “new site” from Neustatt as the clearing name .
Neustadt , Canada, for example , has a different origin , which is simply named after the (German) hometown of the founders, as was common in colonialism. This also applies to numerous non-European cities of the following non-German variants. That these are founding cities cannot be deduced from the name.
"New City" is a common name for a city in the respective national language in many other countries as well:
- Nea polis was called the founding of cities by the Greeks: Neapolis (old Gr., Neugr Neaopoli), from this: Napoli (dt. Naples ) in Italy, Nablus in Palestine, Nabeul in Tunisia, engl. Naples in the USA
- Qart-Hadašt , the Phoenician name for Carthage , translates as "New City".
- Nieuwe Stad / Nieuwstad / Nieuwstadt , Dutch
- Nystad , Swedish

- Villanova Italian, Spanish, Vila Nova Portuguese, Villeneuve French, Vilanova Catalan
- Nove Mesto in the Czech Republic, Nove Mesto in Slovakia, Novo Mesto in Slovenia (slav. Mesto , city ')
- Novgorod / Nowograd / Nowogard (Slav. Degree "castle, city"), Naugard is a Germanization of the name
- Uusikaupunki in Finland
- Yenişehir or Nevşehir in Turkey (Turkish yeni 'new', şehir "city"), name of several districts and districts, such as B. in Bursa , Diyarbakir and Mersin
distribution
Neustadt is one of the most common place names in Germany. 36 cities called Neustadt (or one called Neuenstadt and some whose name used to be like this) from six Central European countries have come together to form the largest international city friendship Neustadt in Europe .
In some cases Neustadt is the official name of a borough or district, in other cases the name is used informally for a small area within the city.
In his book published in 1954, Julius Fischer listed more than 600 places called “Neustadt” in Germany and abroad.
