history
Around 1800 the area of today's Neustadtviertel was largely undeveloped. Due to the increasing number of factories, however, the number of inhabitants of Linz also rose sharply. To protect against damage to health, the new factories were located far away from the original city center , where workers' settlements were also built. Between the horse-drawn railway in the east, the western railway in the south, Landstrasse and Mozartstrasse, a popular residential area for employees and civil servants, the Neustadtviertel, emerged from 1862. The streets were laid out in a straight line in a checkerboard pattern, the houses were built a few stories high and given the facade decor typical of the Wilhelminian era. The road network was not completed until the 1950s when the building block on Goethe- / Dinghoferstraße was built.
The center of the quarter is Hessenplatz. It was named after an old house regiment in the city. The Linz markets were moved here from the main square and finally a large park with a fountain was created. Today Hessenplatz is also an important stop for local trolleybus and regional bus services. In recent years the Neustadtviertel has been heavily influenced by the influx of migrants.
