The Makartviertel is a district of the Upper Austrian capital Linz in the Lustenau district . The area was a separate statistical district from 1957 to 2013, which also included part of Spallerhof , and now belongs to the Bulgariplatz statistical district together with the Andreas-Hofer-Platz district .

history

Until 1873 the area of the Makartviertel belonged to the municipality of Lustenau. After the incorporation at the end of the 19th century , the typical Wilhelminian- style houses were built here as a continuation of the Neustadtviertel in a grid- shaped construction, today mainly preserved along Wiener Straße. The south-eastern area of the district developed into a working-class district, which was promoted by the settlement of industry. Until the post-war period, the main employer was the Poschacher brewery , which experienced a rise from a small local brewery to a large brewery. From the 1960s onwards, numerous residential buildings were built, such as the Lenau high-rise. The weak infrastructure and the heavy through traffic, despite the location close to the center, made the quarter unattractive. One of the countermeasures since the 1990s was the construction of the modern residential and office district "Lenaupark".

As part of the reorganization of the districts on January 1, 2014 (decision of the city senate of September 2013), the Makartviertel was largely integrated into the newly created Bulgariplatz district. The part south of the Mühlkreisautobahn went to the Spallerhof district.

Geography and population

The Makartviertel was in the southeast of the center of Linz. It bordered the Neustadtviertel in the north, the Franckviertel in the east, the Wankmüllerhofviertel , the Spallerhof and St. Peter district in the south and the Andreas-Hofer-Platz district in the west . The population was 6,870 in 2012, that was 3.6% of the total population, there were 583 buildings (2.5%) and 3,918 apartments (3.6%). The area share in the urban area of Linz was 1.73 km² (1.8%).
