The Innere Neustadt is a district of Dresden in the Neustadt district . The name is derived from the "New Royal City", the Altendresden district, which was rebuilt by 1732 after a city fire . In contrast to the Outer New Town , the core of the Inner New Town was located within the city fortress and is therefore also known as the historic New Town.

location

The city fortress of Dresden around 1750 - on the right bank of the Elbe the New Royal City

The Inner New Town lies in the Neustadt district opposite the Inner Old Town and the Elbe flows around it in an arch. Four bridges ( Albert , Carola , Augustus and Marienbrücke ) connect the district with the southern bank. The streets that lead over the bridges cross the Inner New Town and run towards Albertplatz . This is located at the northern end of the district and is the focus of almost all major streets.

Culture and buildings

The main street forms a line of sight from the Golden Rider to Albertplatz .

There are several Dresden cultural institutions and museums in the Inner Neustadt . The Erich Kästner Museum is located on Albertplatz and the Museum of Ethnology is located in the Japanese Palace . The Kügelgenhaus - Museum of Dresden Romanticism is located on the main street , and the Kunsthaus Dresden is located on Rähnitzgasse . Not far from there is the Societaetstheater .

The Jägerhof is the domicile of the Museum of Saxon Folk Art and the puppet theater collection of the State Art Collections .

In addition to the city festival, which is mainly held on the main street, the summer film nights take place on the banks of the Elbe on the Neustädter Elbe meadows .

There are also numerous important buildings for Dresden in the Inner Neustadt. The reconstruction of the district until 1732 was carried out in the baroque style. Baroque town houses are to this day mainly in the baroque district of Königstrasse . One of the buildings that has not been changed since 1733 is number 15 on Grosse Meißner Strasse. The historic building complex, which survived the devastation of the war unscathed, forms the middle section of the Hotel Bellevue .

The Dreikönigskirche was the seat of the Saxon state parliament from 1990 to 1993 . The government buildings of the government district and the Japanese Palace stretch along the banks of the Elbe . The archer in the perennial garden on the Neustadt bank of the Elbe is striking .

The Golden Rider , a well-known Dresden landmark, is located on the Neustädter Markt ; At the other end of the main street leading through the Inner New Town is the Artesian Fountain on Albertplatz . In between, on the crossing Metzer Straße, there is the largest public car park in automatic operation at the time of its opening and the Neustädter Markthalle directly opposite .

Until February 1945, the large Neustädter Rathaus was located on Neustädter Markt , which was not rebuilt after its destruction and had to make way for a prefabricated housing estate. A specially founded initiative has set itself the goal of rebuilding the town hall and restoring the Neustädter Markt. On Beaumontplatz, which no longer exists, was the Palais Wackerbarth , built in 1728 by Knöffel for General Graf Wackerbarth as a knight academy , the ruins of which were demolished in 1962/1963. Opposite it was in the direction of Carolaplatz Sarrasani's “Circus-Theater 5000”, which opened in 1912.

traffic

The main streets are Hauptstraße (a pedestrian zone) as an extension of Augustusbrücke , Albertstraße as an extension of Carolabrücke and Königstraße . Other important streets are Antonstrasse (the extension of Marienbrücke ) and Bautzner Strasse . In the street that connects the bridge forecourt near the bank, Köpckestrasse and Große Meißner Strasse are of outstanding importance.

On two east-west and three north-south running routes, a total of eight tram lines run by the Dresden public transport company run through the district. The most important stop is Albertplatz . With the exception of line 81, which touches the Innere Neustadt at Neustadt train station, no city bus routes serve the district, only regional bus routes.

To the west, the Inner New Town is bounded by the embankment of the long-distance railway line to Leipzig . The Dresden-Neustadt station in the northwest of the district is a remote station .

Economy and authorities

Government district with the Ministry of Finance and the State Chancellery

The most important branches of the economy in the Inner Neustadt are gastronomy and retail. As in the inner old town, there are many hotels and restaurants in this part of downtown Dresden. The largest hotel is the Hotel Bellevue of the Westin hotel chain . Both Königstraße and Hauptstraße form important shopping malls in Dresden city center.

The State Chancellery and all ministries of the Free State of Saxony are centered around Carolaplatz and form the government district . Currently there are eight ministries, which are located in several historical, but also newly built buildings. The main state archive is also located in the government district.
