The Artesian Fountain on Albertplatz in Dresden is a spatially separated fountain ensemble consisting of a fountain house, a drinking fountain and a fountain with a water basin. The artesian well was drilled northwest of Albertplatz by Freiberg miners from 1832 to 1836 in order to supply Dresden Neustadt with clean water. The water from the 243.25 meter deep well emerges through natural pressure and flows all year round. Because of the small amount of water, the well was never able to fulfill its intended purpose.

On the Antonplatz in Dresden's Old Town also 1832/33 made efforts to drill an artesian well, failed.

Well house

The source ( location ) is located under a well house with a slate-covered pyramid roof on Antonstrasse next to the high-rise building on Albertplatz . The old source house came from Paul Siemen . The listed complex was completely reconstructed by 1990. Due to the new buildings on the high-rise (2014/15), the fountain house is spatially surrounded, the southern facade to Antonstrasse and partly the western facade are unobstructed.

Drinking fountain (tap)

The well is drilled 243.25 meters deep underground. There he encounters water-bearing, tense layers with sufficient water pressure to allow the water to rise. The upstream water comes from mountain ranges south-southwest of the city. The Cretan strata in the Elbe Valley below the city of Dresden plunge in a north-easterly direction. Some horizons are water-bearing, in a special way the deepest layers of sandstones and rocks of the Planer facies . The loose structure in this cenomaniac sandstone and the sealing layers (plans, Latvians ) allow the water to pass deep under the bed of the Elbe. The great depth from which the water rises in the borehole at Albertplatz is the reason for its temperature of 17.8 degrees Celsius.

The water emerges through natural pressure, has a low water hardness and has a very good taste, so that it is often used as a mineral water substitute. There is also a drinking fountain at the residential high-rise located there , which was built in 1990 based on a design by Rolf Roeder. However, according to the Green Space Office (operator of the fountain), the water is not of drinking water quality , which is why this tap is not labeled as a drinking fountain.

Water basin

The well water feeds a small fountain in addition to the drinking fountain. The fountain house stands to the west of the confluence of Königsbrücker Strasse in Albertplatz, while the drinking fountain and fountain stand east of it. The fountain is located in a temple-like round building with a goldfish basin designed in 1906 by the city councilor Hans Erlwein . The Tempietto , damaged in World War II , was reconstructed in 1991. Because of its warm spring water, the fountain - in contrast to the two main fountains on Albertplatz, "Still Waters" and "Stormy Waves" - can also be used in winter, as it bubbles all year round.
