List of fountains and water features in Dresden
The list of fountains and water features in Dresden gives an overview of the most important public fountains and water features in the city. There are around 300 fountains and water features in Dresden, part of which belongs to the city of Dresden and is looked after by the Green Spaces Office.
The first fountains in Dresden were mentioned as early as the 15th century. The oldest preserved fountain in Dresden is the Queckbrunnen , which was built in 1461. Especially during the Baroque period , numerous fountains in Dresden were designed as decorative elements by well-known artists, some of which are still preserved today. There are over 20 fountains in the baroque Zwinger area . The baroque Neptune Fountain in the former Palais Brühl-Marcolini is 40 meters wide and is the largest fountain in Dresden. In the 19th century, the neo-Gothic cholera fountain, the most ornamented fountain in the city, was built. Around 1900 artists such as Robert Diez and Georg Wrba shaped the creation of fountains in Dresden, which came to a standstill during the Nazi era . Numerous fountain sculptures were melted down or destroyed and only partially reconstructed after the end of the Second World War . The redevelopment of Prager Strasse was a defining feature of the city from 1969 to 1972 , and was largely shaped by various fountain systems that have recently been replaced by more modern systems. In the course of new buildings and renovations, Dresden's fountain landscape is extremely eventful; The number of Dresden fountains has been increasing steadily since 1900 due to the incorporation of surrounding villages. Today Dresden is one of the cities with the greatest number of fountains in Germany.
The list of fountains and water features is therefore limited to fountains that are owned by the City of Dresden and those that shape public space or have found their way into literature on fountains in Dresden. In addition, it was largely avoided to include wells on private properties in the list.
