The Alaunplatz is a square in the Äußere Neustadt district of Dresden . It lies between Kamenzer Strasse and Tannenstrasse and Bischofsweg. The Alaunplatz is connected to the Albertplatz via the eponymous Alaun Street and borders the pub district of the Outer Neustadt in the north. Line 13 of the Dresden tram has a stop “Alaunplatz” there.
Since the former parade ground in nearby Albertstadt is designed with lawns and planted with bushes and trees on the edge, it is also known as the alum park .
history
At the end of the 18th century it was called "An der Dresdner Heide ", in 1830 it was called "Parade Ground" because it was used as an infantry parade ground. Because of the Alaun Street that opens onto the square, it was renamed "Alaunplatz" in 1862.
A barracks for the 108th Royal Saxon Rifle Regiment “Prince Georg” was built in the spring of 1870 on the north side of the military site. The construction had become necessary because the regiment was moved from Leipzig to Dresden. The construction of the barracks at Alaunplatz preceded the construction of the military facilities in Albertstadt to the north . The barracks were destroyed in 1945 and then demolished in 1954. The square was redesigned as a green area in 1960, which is why it is also known as the "alum park". From 1955 to 1990 it was called “Platz der Thälmannpioniere”. After that he was named back to Alaunplatz. On April 25, 2013, the Alum Park was expanded to include the 14,400 square meter area of the "Russensportplatz" adjacent to the west.
Alaunstrasse
The Alaun Street was laid out in 1765 as the "New Street". Powder houses were built on this site as early as 1750, but they were moved to Friedrichstadt in 1764 . At the far end of this street an alum river boiler was built in 1765 . After this boiling plant, the street was called "Alaungasse" from the end of the 18th century. In 1862 it was renamed "Alaunstrasse".
