The Albert Square in Dresden is an approximately circular space in the district of Innere Neustadt . It was landscaped in 1875 by Friedrich Bouché and is now Dresden's most important traffic junction north of the Elbe .

location

Albertplatz is located on the northern edge of the Inner New Town on the border with the Outer New Town . The location within the radius of the inner-city Elbe arc was deliberately chosen so that important streets from Albertplatz are extended by Elbe bridges. Nine streets run in a star shape towards the square. The square is also attached to Antonstrasse and Bautzner Strasse , which touch the square in the north and in this section belong to the 26er Ring . In the south, Albertplatz borders Jorge-Gomondai-Platz , which is followed by the main street . The baroque boulevard Königstrasse and Albertstrasse also meet Albertplatz.

traffic

The road traffic is led in a circle around the edge of the square. As a transfer station in the Dresden tram network , the square is of particular importance. A total of five tram lines run across the square, three of them via the stop centrally located on the square (lines 3, 7, 8) and the other two via the stop on the crossing Bautzner Straße (lines 6, 11).

The Dresden-Neustadt train station is located about 400 meters west of Albertplatz on Schlesischer Platz. Access to the long-distance railway network is possible via this station .

history

The square was laid out from 1817 after the rubbing of the fortifications around Dresden a. a. In 1812, the Black Gate , located on today's southern edge of the square, was demolished. With the completion in 1829, he was in the name of Bautzen Place baptized in 1871 in honor of the future King Albert in Albert Square renamed. In 1945 the name of the square was changed to Red Army Square . From 1946 it was called Platz der Einheit (after the forced unification of the SPD and KPD to form the SED unity party) before it was finally renamed Albertplatz in 1991 .

Important buildings

The Erich Kästner Museum and the neo-baroque Villa Eschebach , which the kitchen manufacturer Eschebach had built in 1901 and which today belongs to the Dresdner Volksbank Raiffeisenbank , are located on Albertplatz . 1929 for the Saxon State Bank built high-rise building on Albert Square , for several decades the seat of the Dresden Transport (DVB) , was with 11 floors and 40 meters high, one of the first built in Germany high-rise buildings in reinforced concrete - frame construction , it stood since the departure of the transport companies in Year 1998 to 2015 empty. In 2012 it was sold to an investor who had the office building renovated in 2014/15 and a new building complex with z. B. has supplemented a larger grocery store.

A building popular with Dresdeners as a meeting point is on the inner north side of the roundabout: the so-called DVB-Häusl. It houses a ticket booth.

Fountain

Fountain “Stille Wasser” by Robert Diez , in the background the high-rise

On the northern edge of Albertplatz are the Tempiotto of the Artesian Fountain , created according to a design by Hans Erlwein in 1906, and the associated drinking fountain, designed by Rolf Roeder . The actual fountain with its pyramid-shaped fountain house is located on Antonstrasse, which leads to the west, about 20 meters west of the high-rise. It has a depth of 243.5 meters and was sunk from 1832 to 1836 by Freiberg miners under the direction of the council carpenter Paul Siemen . The water in the fountain has a constant temperature of around 16 ° C, both in winter and in summer. The Tempiotto of the Erlwein City Planning Council is a gem of neoclassical small architecture. The round fountain system, which has two open drains, is framed by six pedunculate oaks. The modern drinking fountain has a columnar back wall and a basin made of Upper Lusatian granite . The spout and drain pipe are made of bronze. It is 1.25 meters high, 65 cm and 64 cm deep. The drinking fountain, created as part of the development on the northern edge of the square, was inaugurated on July 24, 1990. On the back is a three centimeter bronze medallion with a monogram RR and the year 89 .

"Stormy Waves" fountain

In the middle of the square, on both sides of the tram stop, stand the twin fountains Stormy Waves (west of the stop) and Still Water (east) , designed by Robert Diez . The wells were ceremoniously put into operation on September 1, 1894. This was preceded by a competition announced by the city to design two fountains. The groups of figures are made of bronze, created in 1893/94 by the art and bell foundry C. Albert Bierling from Dresden. The fountain basins are made of granite. The stormy waves represent the storm on a wild horse, fighting with a snake whip with sea monsters. The still water , on the other hand, is dreamy, a nymph with a lily in her hand is playing music while frogs, snails and mussels surround her. The architects were Giese & Weidner . Both wells have a diameter of 19 meters. The bronze fountain sculptures were dismantled for the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900 and exhibited there as impressive examples of German foundry technology.

The Soviet War Memorial, designed by Otto Rost , stood on the site of the Stormy Waves fountain, which was destroyed in the war . This memorial for the fallen of the 5th Soviet Army was moved in 1993 to Olbrichtplatz near the Military History Museum . In time for the 100th anniversary of the fountain, the stormy waves were rebuilt by 1994.

Monuments

Bronze figure by Mátyás Varga

A bronze figure created by the Hungarian artist Mátyás Varga in 1999 shows a homage to Erich Kästner as a little boy sitting on the wall of the Villa Augustin , today the Erich Kästner Museum. In his childhood memories, when I was a little boy, he described how, as a little boy, he was already sitting on the wall and followed the goings-on on Albertplatz.

On the northeast side of the square at the entrance to Alaunstrasse, which leads to the north, there is the 1.7 meter high Erich Kästner monument by Wolf-Eike Kuntsche made of bronze. With a picture of young people, all of his books stacked on top of one another, the spines of the books neatly labeled with their titles and quotes by Kästner, the memorial commemorates the writer who grew up in the immediate vicinity on Königsbrücker Strasse .

The larger than life Schiller memorial, created in 1913 by the sculptor Selmar Werner and the architect Oswin Hempel , is located in a green area between Hauptstraße, Königstraße and Albertplatz . The marble wall of the monument shows nine reliefs from Schiller's works.

At the transition from Albertplatz to Hauptstrasse there is a memorial stone for Jorge Gomondai who was the first to be killed in a xenophobic attack in Dresden after reunification in 1991. In memory of him, this square has been called Jorge Gomondai Square since 2006 .
