Friedrich Kracht (born July 9, 1925 in Bochum ; † November 17, 2007 in Dresden ) was a German painter and graphic artist and an important representative of Concrete Art .

education and study

From 1940 to 1943 Kracht completed an apprenticeship as a draftsman. From 1947 to 1949 he studied at the "School for Fine and Applied Arts Dortmund" from Hans Tombrock . When he went to the University of Architecture and Fine Arts in Weimar in 1949 , Kracht followed him and continued his studies there from 1950 to 1951. When the visual arts department in Weimar was closed, he went to Dresden in 1951, where he finished his studies with Heinz Lohmar at the Dresden University of Fine Arts in 1953 .

Construction-related work

Since 1953 Kracht lived as a freelance artist in Dresden. He became a member of the Association of Visual Artists and worked in the field of painting and graphics. More and more often he also took on building-related work. From 1954 to 1960 he went on study trips to the Balkans, Italy, France, Spain and Africa. Numerous travel sketches were created, mainly with a spring pen. On his return he was expelled from the SED for allegedly attempting to flee the Republic. In 1960 he joined the “Kunst am Bau” production cooperative for fine artists, which had been working in the studio of the sculptor Edmund Moeller since 1958 . Murals and structural walls were created, such as on the Robotron site at Pirnaischer Platz or the Hotel Newa on Prager Strasse . Together with Karl-Heinz Adler , he developed patented processes for the surface coating of concrete.

In the mid-1960s, Kracht developed a catalog of types for children's playground equipment in collaboration with the German Building Academy, which shaped the playgrounds in the GDR. Since 1965 he worked together with Karl-Heinz Adler on the development of serial systems for structural walls, playground equipment, planter and fountain systems as well as street furniture. A catalog was created in 1973 for the serial molded stone system. As a result, the concrete walls were used throughout the GDR. The structural wall at Tierpark Berlin was an essential work . In 1979 Kracht designed the two fountains on Neustädter Markt in Dresden.

After completing his studies, Kracht took a different path in his freelance work than what the Tombrock School taught. Inspired by the ideas of the Bauhaus , he developed a formal language close to concrete art. From 1984 Kracht participated in exhibitions on concrete art (1984 Neue Dresdner Galerie, "Form, Color and Geometry - Hermann Glöckner 's Birthday"; 1985 in the Clubgalerie August Bebel, Dresden; 1987 Galerie Thomaskirchhof, Leipzig; 1988 in Budapest "DDR - Concrete"). Since 1988 he has been involved in the International Symposia on Concrete Art in Poland.

“It is precisely the apparent clarity of the structure, the obviously rationally comprehensible image structure, that suggests to the viewer a clarity, a security beyond the decorative character of these series, which also remind of the design forms in buildings to which the artist knew he was committed. As much as the strict structure of the picture, the clarity of the lines and surfaces, the mathematical logic of the details and the luminosity of the deliberately chosen colors in Friedrich Kracht's pictures emphasize the constructivist art style, if you look for a long time, the analytical gaze that follows the construction becomes evident irritated by a whole series of images, a paradoxical visual experience is made against the attempt to rationally penetrate the image.
