Edmund Moeller (born August 8, 1885 in Neustadt bei Coburg , † January 19, 1958 in Dresden ) was a German sculptor .

Life

Edmund Moeller began his studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden in the summer of 1904 with Heinrich Epler , and from the summer of 1905 to the winter of 1907/08 he studied in Robert Diez's studio . He later continued his studies in Düsseldorf .

In addition to numerous portrait sculptures for the Dresden Hygiene Museum , he also created the relief Die Bomätscher on the Neustädter Elbe bank below the Dresden Albert Bridge . The marble reliefs The Congregation to be Converted and The Converted Congregation are set up in the Thomaskirche on Bodenbacher Strasse in Dresden-Gruna . In 1939 he received the art prize of the city of Dresden for his work. It was to be the last (known) tribute to Moeller.

The most famous of his works is the Peruvian Freedom Monument in Trujillo , inaugurated in 1929 , the Monumento a la Libertad , which is still a symbol of the Peruvian War of Independence. Envy of his artist colleagues for his success, he got into financial difficulties after 1940 due to a lack of commissions. In debt and almost forgotten, he died on January 19, 1958 in Dresden.

Further of his works are represented in the Dresden sculpture collection in the Albertinum and in the Städtische Galerie Dresden as well as in the garden of his studio house in Dresden. For the construction of the Freedom Monument in Trujillo, he received the highest Peruvian state award, the Order of El Sol del Perú , and the title of professor from the Peruvian government . Moeller used the prize money to build a living room and a spacious studio building on Gostritzer Strasse 10 in Dresden. Today it is managed by the artists' association Kunst + Bau , which published a book about his work in 2005 on his 120th birthday in order to keep the memory of him alive.
