The honorary citizenship is the highest honor that the city of Neustadt b.Coburg awarded to. The award is given to personalities who have made a special contribution to public life, to the community, to politics, culture or the economy. The award is made by resolution of the city council.

Since 1839 the following people have been made honorary citizens.

  1. Jonathan Freiherr von Künßberg zu Sonneberg (born June 17, 1796 in Meiningen; † September 18, 1880 at Wernstein Castle near Kulmbach)
    Chamberlain, Chief Forester
    Awarded on December 27, 1839
    The appointment was made in recognition of his services during the devastating fire on June 24, 1839.
  2. Johann Georg Heusinger (* December 17, 1820 in Nassach; † June 18, 1884 in Neustadt near Coburg)
    Senior teacher
    Awarded around 1860
    Heusinger was in Neustadt b. Coburg and worked there as a senior teacher and organist. He founded the choral society Liederkranz and was made an honorary citizen as an excellent school man, writer and poet as well as the spiritual center of the city's social and aesthetic life.
  3. Ernst Gumlich (born January 13, 1816 in Coburg, † May 5, 1892 in Coburg)

    Awarded on April 26, 1891
    Gumlich received the honor in grateful recognition of his many years of loyal services as a preacher and pastor in the city community, as well as in just appreciation of his selfless, devoted work and work in the field of education and poor relief, as a member of the school board and the poor commission.
  4. Edmund von Wittken (born December 3, 1837 in Zeitz, † January 28, 1927 in Coburg)

    Wittken was head of the Coburg ministerial department. In this function he took particular care of the situation in Neustadt b. Coburg. and earned special merits by supporting the school system, kindergarten and poor relief. A street is named after him.
  5. Ferdinand Scheller (born February 5, 1839 in Hildburghausen, † February 23, 1922 in Coburg)

    Scheller was made an honorary citizen as a well-known donor. He set up a legacy of 30,000 marks, the interest income of which was distributed to worthy, shameful poor of the city every February 5th (his birthday). A plaque with a portrait attached to the Schellerheim reminds of him.
  6. Max Oscar Arnold (born March 29, 1854 in Neustadt near Coburg; † January 27, 1938 ibid.)

    Awarded on December 23, 1909
    Arnold was a long-standing member of parliament and president of the state parliament for the Duchy of Coburg. In recognition of his work and his services to the promotion of the city, he was made an honorary citizen. In his memory, a memorial was erected for him, a square and the refuge on the Muppberg were named after him.

  7. Paul von Hindenburg (born October 2, 1847 in Posen, † August 2, 1934 at Gut Neudeck)
    Field Marshal General
    Awarded on 1917
    Hindenburg was made an honorary citizen for his achievements as Field Marshal General of the World War, as Reich President and as the first leader of the German people in hard times, hardship and the struggle for the people's existence. The memorial ceremony took place ten years later on October 3, 1927. On October 7, 1927, a square was named after him.
  8. Edmund Moeller (born August 8, 1885 in Neustadt near Coburg, † January 19, 1958 in Dresden)

    Moeller was honored with honorary citizenship in recognition of his outstanding achievements in the field of fine arts and in grateful appreciation of his great contribution to the global recognition of intellectual values. A path is also named after him.
  9. Emil Patzschke (born September 10, 1861 in Trautzschen; † May 3, 1932)

    On the occasion of his 70th birthday, Patzschke was honored in recognition of his lasting, serious work for the community of the German Empire and in grateful appreciation of his outstanding, dedicated work for the city of Neustadt b. Coburg and its habitat made an honorary citizen.

    The appointment was made on the occasion of his 75th birthday in recognition of his German sentiments and his selfless work to bless the city. A street is also named after him.

    Arnold is the son of the politician Max Oscar Arnold. On the occasion of his 85th birthday, he was made an honorary citizen for his extraordinary services as a local poet.
