Johann Benjamin Thomae
Johann Benjamin Thomae (born January 23, 1682 in Pesterwitz , † March 8, 1751 in Dresden ) was a Dresden cabinet maker and sculptor. In 1712, Thomae was employed as an assistant to Balthasar Permoser for the plastic decoration of the Dresden Zwinger . In the same year he became a court sculptor at the Dresden court. In 1720 Thomae acquired Dresden citizenship.
Works
In 1719 he made the figures for the Turkish Palace and the Opera House at the Zwinger and in 1723 the portal of the Weinbergkirche in Pillnitz . In 1728 he created the medallion for August the Strong at the Knight's Academy and the trophy jewelry for the Kurländer Palais . Thomae created the gable frieze of the Japanese Palace in 1733 .
He made the models for the pulpit altar, the organ and the confessionals of the Frauenkirche and in 1738 the altar of the Dreikönigskirche . At the end of the 1730s, Thomae was also in charge of the interior work on the Bartholomäuskirche in Röhrsdorf . In 1742 he and his student Johann Gottfried Knöffler created the nymph fountain on the Neustädter Markt , one of these fountains was on the corner of the Neustädter town hall . Thomae's student Knöffler married his daughter Sophie Charlotte.
The baptismal font in the Church of the Holy Trinity in Schmiedeberg is also one of his works.
Honors
In Dresden, Thomaestrasse in Johannstadt is named after him, which leads from Striesener Strasse to the Trinitatiskirche . There is a Johann-Benjamin-Thomae-Weg in his place of birth Pesterwitz .
