When the Italian architect Gaetano Chiaveri built the Catholic Court Church , Chiaveris craftsmen and artists from Italy probably also lived near the construction site on the left, steep bank of the Elbe in numerous small houses. This corresponded to the principle of the cathedral huts , which were set up in the Middle Ages during the construction and also for the later maintenance of the great cathedrals. The Dresden vernacular soon called the house "Italian village". In the course of the construction of the new Royal Court Theater , the first Semperoper, the settlement was demolished with the exception of a few inns.

Later, a popular restaurant was located at this point, which took the name "Italian village". There, on the day of the Reformation in 1861, the Association for the Maintenance of Free Speech Polyhymnia , later the Corps Altsachsen, was founded. Before the First World War in 1911/13, a representative new building was built according to the design of the Dresden city building councilor Hans Erlwein , which was appropriate to the architectural rank of the buildings in the area and to the neighboring leading Dresden Hotel Bellevue (formerly Calberlasche Zuckersiederei) . In 1956/57 the destroyed building was rebuilt by the architect Gerhard Guder .

After 1990 the restaurant was initially closed and later restored. Today it is particularly popular with tourists due to its central location. Not far from the Italian village, on the other side of the street from the terrace bank , is the Basteischlösschen . In February 2019 there was a change of operator in the Italian village and it was reopened by the restaurateurs Maik and Janet Kosiol.
