The Pirnaische Platz is a square in Dresden , which, like the Postplatz, goes back to a historical gate system of the old city fortress of Dresden . The suburb of the same name begins at Pirnaischer Platz .

location

Pirnaischer Platz, 1863

The square is located on the eastern edge of the inner old town and on the western edge of the Pirnaische Vorstadt. At the present time, the inner city pass and the bypass in north-south direction intersect at the square.

history

Until the demolition of the city wall itself which was there from 1591 to 1820 Pirnaische gate , the output of the city, which Pirna turns. With the demolition of the gate in 1820/1821 the free space was created, which was planned and created by Gottlob Friedrich Thormeyer .

From 1740 to 1758 the residential palace of Johann Georg Maximilian von Fürstenhoff was in front of the gate .

After the creation of the Ringstrasse, the breakthrough of König-Johann-Strasse - the later eastern part of Wilsdruffer Strasse - and the creation of Grunaer Strasse , the square developed into an important traffic junction. During the air raids on Dresden in February 1945, the buildings on the square were destroyed. The buildings destroyed included the imperial palace (the Illgen office building) built between 1895 and 1897 and the Mohren pharmacy. The north-eastern end of the square was formed by the building ensemble built between 1964 and 1966, consisting of the 14-storey high-rise Grunaer Strasse 5 and the low-rise restaurants Gastmahl des Meeres and Pirnaisches Tor .

In the early 1970s, a pedestrian tunnel was created under the square. Part of the city fortifications could be seen in it. After a fire on September 13, 2006, the tunnel was closed and poured with concrete in July 2010.

Development

The most important development on the square is on its western edge. The baroque style country house is located with the gable facing the square . A controversial fire escape in postmodern style was added to this front, which is not the actual main facade .

The Dresden Police Headquarters is located next to the Landhaus . This was built at the beginning of the 20th century in late historicism and is particularly representative due to its bastion shape.

The space itself is spacious, with several rows of trees between the two lanes of St. Petersburger Straße , without the space being used as a park. On the southeast side is the building complex of the former VEB Kombinat Robotron with a glass fountain from 1975. Leoni Wirth designed the fountain, the terrazzo basin has a diameter of 9.3 meters. The pool floor consists of mosaic tiles. The construction was carried out by the glazier Helmut Kappelt and the blacksmith Karl Bergmann.

St. Petersburger Strasse crosses the square from north to south . This four-lane federal road ( B 170 ) crosses Dresden via the Carolabrücke to the north and is an important bypass in the inner city in this direction. The Wilsdruffer Straße leading to Postplatz has been dismantled and its importance has been downgraded. The extension of this street to the east is the four-lane Grunaer Straße , which leads to Straßburger Platz . The Landhausstraße connects the square with the Neumarkt . 60,000 vehicles roll across Pirnaischer Platz every day.

In addition to St. Petersburger Strasse, the north-south route of the tram runs on its own track structure, which can also be used by buses. Another tram line runs in a west-east direction. Six tram lines and four bus lines operate on the square. The Pirnaische place is one of over 40,000, off or changing coaches passengers per day (as of 2015), according to the Dresden Transport of the stops Hauptbahnhof (including Hauptbahnhof Nord) and before the post office place one of the most important hubs in their power measured at this same number .
