Feast of the Sea in Halle (Saale)

In the early 1960s, Rudolf Kroboth presented the concept of a chain of fish restaurants in larger cities in the republic. At the time, Kroboth was advertising manager in the Rostock fish combine and host of the program Tip des Fischkochs, which he developed .

On July 28, 1966, the first feast of the sea opened in Weimar . In the same year 15 more restaurants followed. At the end of 1989 there was the Feast of the Sea at 33 locations.

Appearance and marketing

Similar to western system catering , there were uniform menus, dishes, clothing, etc. In the cities of the bars, Rudolf Kroboth organized a show cooking in mobile fish kitchens. In addition, magazine and cinema advertising was placed.

Food offer

Up to 100 dishes were offered in the restaurants. Herring , saithe and cod were always available . Although the restaurants, like the Interhotels, received preferential delivery, the menu varied depending on the supply situation. Among other things, there were: “ Italian Risi Bisi from fish”, “Ticino fish schnitzel ” , “Bremer Labskaus ”, “ Russian fish soljanka ” and “ Russian eggs on caviar”.

The sales prices were between 1.50 marks (starter) and 5.00 marks (main course).

Most of the recipes and tips for preparing fish came from Rudolf Kroboth himself. He regularly sent out circulars and once a year there were training courses in Rostock for the chefs.

After 1990

After the fall of the Wall , the Banquet of the Sea was no longer centrally managed as a chain. The individual restaurants went into private ownership and were subsequently often continued by the former property managers. But they still operate individually under the name of the “Banquet of the Sea”.

Locations after 1990 included:

  • Weimar, 1966 to 2013
  • Potsdam , 1970 to 2014
