Pirnaisches Tor
The Pirnaische Tor , a main gate in the Dresden fortifications , was the southeastern city gate of the old town of Dresden . It replaced the Frauentor and the Kreuzpforte at the end of the 16th century. The gate wings were originally made of strong oak planks and provided with sturdy iron fittings. In the course of the year 1820 the Pirna Gate was demolished in the course of the demolition of Dresden. The gate was named after the town of Pirna , located southeast of Dresden on the Elbe .
history
As part of the fortress renovation and the urban expansion to the east, the Pirna Gate was rebuilt in 1590/91 as a representative building in the Renaissance style by the Nuremberg master builder Paul Buchner to replace the Frauentor and Kreuzpforte. Immediately in front of the gate ran the water-filled moat, over which a bridge led. When the Saxon state capital was occupied by Prussian troops in the Seven Years' War in 1760, the Pirna Gate was also damaged and, among other things, the life-size equestrian statue of the Saxon Elector Christian I created by the baroque sculptor Andreas Walther III in 1593 was destroyed. In 1820, the gate was completely demolished as part of the city's expansion. To this day, however, the name of the square on which the gate stood has been preserved as Pirnaischer Platz .
Further gates of the old town of Dresden were: Wilsdruffer Tor , Elbtor , Frauentor , Kreuzpforte and Seetor .
At Grunaer Straße 5, a HO restaurant was called “Pirnaisches Tor”. The senior citizens' home at Grunaer Strasse 6 in Dresden is named after the Pirnaischer Tor.
