The Innere Altstadt is a district in the Altstadt district and the historic city center of the Saxon state capital Dresden . It is part of the old town I district .
location
The district is located on the left side of the Elbe and stretches from the Elbe on the Terrassenufer in the north to the town hall in the south. The district is delimited by the location of the old Dresden fortifications, which were removed at the beginning of the 19th century . This location can still be seen in many places today thanks to the ring that was provided with green spaces after 1945 (a street system consisting of Wallstraße / Marienstraße , Dr.-Külz-Ring / Waisenhausstraße and Ringstraße / St. Petersburger Straße ).
After the demolition of the city fortress, the Postplatz was built on the site of the earlier Wilschen Tor on the western border of the inner old town , and the Pirnaische Platz on the eastern border of the Pirnaischer Tor . The Augustus Bridge and the Carolabrücke represent the connection to the Inner New Town on the other side of the Elbe.
Economy and population
The inner old town is the district of Dresden with the highest hotel density. Hotels of the chains Hilton , Kempinski , Seaside Hotel Gruppe, Steigenberger Hotel and art'otel are located in the inner old town.
Since it was almost completely destroyed by the air raids on Dresden in February 1945, the inner old town is no longer of great importance as an inner city . On the one hand, the district has been quasi gutted, on the other hand, at the beginning of the 20th century, the suburb of the lake and Prager Strasse developed into a competing shopping district in the city.
In the course of the development on Neumarkt , additional retail space, but also new living space, will be created there. Retail facilities were also built on the Altmarkt , so that the Inner Old Town will increasingly take on additional functions in addition to that of the center for tourism in a city center. Due to the almost complete destruction of the living space in this district, the new construction almost exclusively with commercial space and the high rents, the population and density are still low.
Attractions
Many of the most famous Dresden buildings are in the inner old town. In addition to the Frauenkirche, these include the Zwinger , the Semperoper , the Residenzschloss , the Catholic Court Church , the Kreuzkirche and numerous other buildings.

Important places are the Altmarkt , the Neumarkt , the Theaterplatz and the Schloßplatz . There are also parks in the small part of town, such as the Brühlsche Garten at the eastern end of the Brühlsche Terrasse and the pond at the Zwinger.
Infrastructure
The inner old town has a dense network of tram lines operated by Dresden's public transport company . At the edge of the district is the Postplatz , which is the most important node in the tram network. Only two of the twelve tram lines (lines 10 and 13) do not run through the inner old town.
There are four-lane bypass roads in the east and south of the district. The Wilsdruffer street that runs through the district, was dissolved in recent years from the main road network by reducing the number of lanes and the speed limit was reduced. The inner old town also has a dense network of underground car parks . As part of the new buildings on the Altmarkt and Neumarkt, these possibilities were created in the two decades from 1990, which are rather untypical for a historic old town.
