Altfranken is a town in the Saxon state capital Dresden .

location

The village of Altfranken is located in the west of Dresden between Gompitz and the Freitaler village of Pesterwitz . Together with Gompitz, it forms the statistical district Gompitz / Altfranken and within it the statistical district 998 Altfranken.

history

Old Franconia Castle
Remains of the gate system of the old Franconian castle that was demolished in 1939

Old Franconia was first mentioned as Aldin Vrankin in a document from 1311 as the property of the cathedral monastery of Meissen . The place name means "settlement to the old Franks", so it is either related to the tribal name of the Franks , which suggests the presumed foundation by Franconian settlers, or is derived from the personal name "Frank (e)". It is assumed that there is a relationship with the Franconian desert between Possendorf and Golberode, which is assumed based on field names .

From 1655 the village belonged to the Dresden office . On January 1, 1997, the previously independent Old Franconia was finally incorporated as a district as the first place in the area around Dresden.

The Altfranken Castle was built until 1852. The Counts of Luckner lived in it . In 1939/40 the palace was demolished by the Nazis. From 2020 it is to be rebuilt as a luxury hotel with 43 rooms and a lookout tower.

economy

Mainly fruit growing and sheep breeding fed the inhabitants of the village in the Middle Ages and the early modern period. Today there is a furniture store, a car dealership and a hotel in Old Franconia. Otherwise the economic importance of Old Franconia is low today. Most of the residents work in Dresden and Freital .

traffic

Altfranken is characterized by two important traffic routes: the B 173 and the A 17 . The A 17 leads directly through Altfranken, which is somewhat mitigated by the Altfranken tunnel . The construction of the tunnel created a clearly visible aisle in Luckner Park, which has since been replanted with trees and bushes.

There are regular bus connections with the DVB line 90 to the city center of Dresden. On November 29, 2008, the new line (line 7) of the Dresden tram from the Gorbitz depot via Altfranken / Gompitz to Pennrich was put into operation.
